Godzilla Raids again DVD 2007.

Review For: Godzilla Raids Again (DVD, 2007)

This was the follow up Godzilla movie to "Goira"(1954),which was renamed "Godzilla King of the Monsters" in the USA,and in which scenes with Raymond Burr were inserted.

This movie was originally called "Gigantis the Fire Monster" due to a mix up with the copyrights of the original film, but was quickly retitled "Godzilla Raids again" when this was sorted.

This isn't by any stretch of the imagination as good as the first Godzilla, and the Japanese actors seem even more stupid than normal.Needless to say Godzilla lives to fight another day.

The DVD is enhanced by an audio commentary, and both the American, and original Japanese versions and the quality of the film, like the majority of Black & White films,is extremely good.

Finally,if you are a Godzilla fan and by some chance you haven,t got this in your collection you will probably want it,but otherwise stick to the original and selected titles of films made in the 80's,90's and into the year 2000.

Review For: Godzilla Raids Again (DVD, 2007)

Godzilla Raids Again is the sequel to the original released one year after the release of the first movie, and in many ways one of the most important additions to the franchise, as it sets the tone that would follow through out the rest of the whole series.

The first thing it did was it introduced a second monster for Godzilla to fight, Anguirus. Anguirus doesn't have any special powers like Godzilla's atomic breath, but he's a worthy enemy for the king of the monsters.

The first movie did very good job at making Godzilla look huge, with lighting techniques, camera speeds, angles, etc. In this movie, when the two monsters are fighting, the camera speed is very fast, almost jittery at times. I makes the epic battles between two giant monsters seem far less intense, almost comical like an old black and white Chaplin flick. Not to mention the absolute aerial shot of Godzilla in the entire series. But these are little nit picks, not to say they ruin the entire movie. Fans should check this out, just to see how the monster rumble got started.

Review For: Godzilla Raids Again (DVD, 2007)

Here we have the second of the legendary Godzilla series in print, courtesy of Classic Media, for the first time in years. Until now, American fans have had to settle for the Americanized version, which was incredibly sloppy with very confused editing. In a dire need to fill every second of dead space, the roar of Aguirus was used, even if Godzilla was on screen. And because of the inability to secure all the rights, the name and overall tone of the film was severely changed.

Onto the product. Obviously, the best thing any fan could hope for is to see the original version. It’s definitely a much more flattering version of the film than its heavily edited version.

The actual video quality isn’t too shabby, especially considering that it’s an old film. The audio quality is reasonable considering the film’s age, as well. It could be better, but it gets the job done. We’re also treated to a very nice featurette called “The Art of Suit Acting”. The only thing that was a little disappointing is that the focus of the featurette wasn’t as much on this film as it tried to cover most of the series. That being said, it wasn’t entirely relevant. Nonetheless, it was very interesting.

Overall, I think a fan can enjoy the opportunity to finally obtain this elusive piece of film and enjoy it the way it should be enjoyed- without the cumbersome and confused editing that American fans were exposed to before.

A rare must see... the 2nd movie made.

A must have for any TOHO collector. This is the rare second Godzilla movie that was rarely seen in America until recently. This disc is well done. The graphics on the case are tastefully done - very nice case. Comes with 2 movies. It contains the original Japanese release, which is great. This is the way it was meant to be watched. This DVD also contains the American hack and slash version that was released in U.S. theatres as "Gigantis the Fire Monster". Any 'Zilla fan will see the obvious discrepencies in this version. No wonder it was never shown on TV when I was a kid. The Japanese version is excellent! Very original. Not hoaky/silly like later Godzilla movies. One of Big G's earliest fights. Anguilis and Godzilla level half of Japan as they fight to the death. Great special effects given the time period. A must see!

Long lost Godzilla sequel finally on DVD for first time

Originally released in Japan in 1955, less than a year after the original Gozira(Godzilla) was released, this sequel, while somewhat rushed is a fun and entertaining 50's era Big monster movie.

Some criticize this one for not being a worthy sequel to the original and for it being somewhat formulaic. However, upon repeated viewings, Godzilla raids Again still is quite enjoyable and contains one of the best big monster fights in all the Godzilla sequels. If you can set aside the low budget and low production values which are prevelent thoughout 50's sci-fi, then you should truly appeciate this one from Toho studios.

Godzilla raids again is considered the "lost" Godzilla movie, as it was nearly completely unavailable in any format in America for 50 years. There have been VHS copies that were sold but never included the orginal Japanese edit of this film, which is drastically different than the American international release.

This DVD contains both versions and also contains a highly informative commentary track by Godzilla experts Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski. They point out many of the differences between the 2 versions and also historical information about the making of the movie and it's long 4 year journey to American theatres. In addition it includes a featureette entitled "the art of suit acting" which is quite interesting and depicts the challenges and difficulties of "being" Godzilla.

Highly recommended for Godzilla fans or if you're just curious about a rare big monster treasure lost to American audiences for many years.

4 out of 5 stars.
