Movie synopsis
The sequel to THE GODFATHER tells the story of both a young Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro), newly arrived in America, and his son Michael (Al Pacino) 40 years later, running the family empire. On the streets of Hell's Kitchen in 1917 New York City, Vito is initiated into the ways of the local Cosa Nostra by his friend Clemenza (Bruno Kirby). After killing the local mafioso in a towel-wrapped gun, Vito becomes the new man to be respected and feared. Meanwhile, a dour Michael Corleone negotiates with business partner Hyman Roth (legendary Method-acting teacher Lee Strasberg in his first film role) in Cuba and testifies in front of a Washington Senate committee. Robert Duvall (Tom Hagen), Diane Keaton (Kay Corleone), Talia Shire (Connie Corleone), and John Cazale (Fredo Corleone), reprising their roles from THE GODFATHER, are outstanding as the people forced to watch the new godfather's moral destruction. De Niro, speaking in Italian, captures the mannerisms of Marlon Brando's Vito Corleone from the first film brilliantly. THE GODFATHER PART II is one of the only major sequels ever made that might just surpass the original.

Editorial reviews

"The musical score plays an even greater role in THE GODFATHER: PART II than it did in the original film. Nostalgic, mournful, evoking lost eras, it stirs emotions...."
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert (10/02/2008)

A Wonderful Sequel and Prequel to an Original Winner

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.
Review For: The Godfather Part II (DVD, 2008, The Coppola Restoration)

Al Pacino shines as Michael Corleone in this sequel to The Godfather, which was dominated by Marlon Brando's performance as his father. The youngest of the Corleone sons, Michael was never supposed to be the heir to the Corleone dynasty power. In fact, he shunned it by enlisting in the Marines during WWII. Not only that, by marrying non-Italian Kay (Diane Keaton), he futher separated himself. But in this movie we find that he accepted the role of the Don very well and eventually became just as ruthless a player as his father could ever be. Eventually alienating almost all of his family, including adopted, trusted family advisor Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall), he reminisces at the end of the movie about the good old days when the boys all assembled for their father's birthday. It is a very touching performance about whether the destruction and alienation was all worth it--especially looking at the forlorn looks on the faces of his children.

Not only a sequel, this movie is also a prequel, which explains how Vito Corleone played originally by Marlon Brando got where he was. In an Academy Award winning Supporting Actor performance, a young Robert De Niro became a superstar in this movie by playing the young Vito Andolini. Vito became Corleone through an immigration error when he fled Sicily to New York as an orphan whose family had been annihilated by the Corleone Don. Not originally involved in crime, the young Vito is practically forced into it when he gets laid off from a retail job and unknowingly helps a friend steal a rug.

This movie thoroughly examines how everyone came to be in the original Godfather, and its success is partly due to how it weaves both movies together seamlessly into a saga. At the end when Michael reminisces we even get to see the deceased brothers and family members in happier times, as Michael reminisces.

There is plenty of action in this movie too, as the Corleone dynasty, already established in Las Vegas, attempts to establish itself in pre-Castro Cuba in a partnership with Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg), an established Jewish gang boss. Michael plays his cards like a pro, and eventually there is plenty of bloodshed.

If you loved the original Godfather, you will love this one too. But the amazing thing to me is how wonderfully this story enhanced the original one. It deserved its Best Picture Oscar.

Godfather II was a real dissappointment....

Being a full blooded Italian, our family has always loved The Godfather movie..

BUT....

In Godfather II, the way that the plot goes BACK and FORTH in time changes is AWFUL!! We had to keep trying to keep each other accurate of where we were in time as we watched the movie. They'd jump from when VITO was a boy, to when MICHAEL was a boy, and then back to CURRENT time, and over and over, and here and there and then.....blah, blah, blah....

I'd have to watch it 10 times to start enjoying it, as it would take that long to put it all together in my mind...

(and then, maybe we're just slow!)

It was SO dissapointing...

I feel that they could have had a much smoother way of making it...

I think that they somewhat redeemed themselves with Godfather III but would have sacrificed that one for a much better Godfather II...

Hope this helps!

Only sequel to win an Oscar

This movie is a bit complex. I did not know that Sonny introduced Carlo to his very own sister, and then they eventually got married. This movie is the only movie in history to win an Academy Award as a sequel.
