Movie synopsis

With GLITTER, pop diva Mariah Carey shows that she has more to offer the world than just a beautiful singing voice. Carey plays Billie Frank, a shy, young mixed-race girl who is sent away by her alcoholic mother at a very early age. At an orphanage, she befriends Louise (Da Brat) and Roxanne (Tia Texada), with the help of her cuddly cat. Flash forward to 1983. Billie and her friends are spotted by a record producer, Timothy Walker (Terrence Howard), who wants them to sing backup for his latest pop-music discovery. But when super DJ Dice (Max Beesley) hears Billie's incredible voice, he makes a shady deal with Timothy to get her out of that dead-end situation. Soon, Billie and Dice are making hits inside the studio, and falling in love outside of it. Eventually, the pressure of her newfound celebrity puts too heavy a strain on Billie, forcing her to decide what it is she really wants from Dice, and what she wants for herself. Directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall, GLITTER is a breezy return to the dance clubs and fashions of 1980s-era Manhattan, with a nostalgic electric musical score (compliments of Terence Blanchard and legendary producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis).

Glitter doesn't sparkle nor shine

Created: 02/16/09
Rotten Tomatoes consensus: Glitter is a hodgepodge of movie cliches and bad acting that's sure to generate unintentional laughs. Unfortunately, the movie is not bad enough to be good.

That said, Glitter doesn't sparkle or shine, and while the written reviews are less than flattering; I found something a little endearing about this film. Maybe it's the undeveloped storyline or quite possibly the comedic way Padma Lakshmi vamps around and sings off key (we've come to know and love the Padma of Top Chef fame). If you're expecting a powerhouse performance from Mariah Carey, prepare to be disappointed, because Mariah cannot act. While there may be some truth to the semi-autobiographical nature of this film; unfortunately, there was no storyline development of Billie/Mariah's rags to riches tale. Mariah's vocal stylings are present (as are those of other artists appearing on the Glitter soundtrack). However, her singing voice does not a story make. It feels like bits and pieces of various stories have been thrown together making it disjointed and most of the storyline elements remain unresolved even in the end when her limousine pulls up to the farm house questions are left unanswered.

All in all, if you're expecting a great movie then don't buy it, because Glitter isn't it. However, if you want to be somewhat entertained, maybe laugh a little, blink back a tear or two, or root for the boy - then Glitter is at best a must see. If you're truly a Mariah Carey fan, then no matter how good or bad you might think this film is, you owe it to yourself to add it to your collection.

I bought the movie to support MC. For those who are not fans, they might think that it is a biography of sorts, however, that is not true. I think that she took what she knew about the music industry and rising to fame and made it into a tear jerking drama. There are funny parts to it as well as parts that I feel everyone can relate to in some way whether it be adoption or just being in a relationship with someone. The movie never really caught on b/c of the release date and 9/11 occuring at the same time, but it was and still is definitely under rated. I think that everyone should watch it. She is definitely a great actress and I recommend watching Wise Girls starring her as well. Other movies w/ the great MC are the Bachelor and the unreleased "Tennessee".

You know how there is point when movies are so bad that they suddenly turn a corner and become good again for it's awfullness?

Glitter is a clear example of this.

A friend of mine gave me this DVD for my birthday as a gag, but let me tell you, it was the best drinking game movie party that I've ever had.

Here's an excerpt of some of the rules:
Transition involving a flash of light (fade to white, explosion, etc):
Say "ooooh!" and then Drink.

Film suddenly is in slow motion:
Shake your head and then Drink.

Billie & her friends wear matching outfits:
Look at what you and your friends are wearing, then Drink.

Glitter stripe moves around Billie's body:
Check yourself for wandering stripes, then Drink.

Billie shows some belly button:
Cover yours, then Drink.

Mariah Carey is the greatest selling female artist ever with her 7 octave voice and a beautiful and glamorous persona it makes it hard to get up and get pop corn during this musical semi auto biography. mariah really hits home with her music and the use of her whistle register has me in awwh!
