Product description

Synopsis
As part two of Stieg Larsson's exceptionally well-received debut trilogy, THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE follows THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO in style. Larsson introduced his title character Lisbeth Salander, the reclusive hacker with a fine-tuned sense of justice, in the first book, but readers learn much more about what makes her tick here. Journalist Mikael Blomkvist, Lisbeth's occasional lover and mystery-solving partner, gets a juicy tip linking a swath of Sweden's business and political elite with illegal sex trafficking. But before he can get the full story, his informer is stabbed in his apartment. When the police find Lisbeth's fingers are on the murder weapon, she becomes the prime suspect and goes into hiding. Mikael and Lisbeth both struggle to clear her name, but in order to do so they must figure out who framed her, and this means dredging up painful pieces of Lisbeth's troubled past. Full of all the detail and energy of his first book, THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE engrosses and enthralls.

Publisher's Note
Mikael Blomkvist, crusading journalist and publisher of the magazine Millennium, has decided to run a story that will expose an extensive sex trafficking operation between Eastern Europe and Sweden, implicating well-known and highly placed members of Swedish society, business, and government.

But he has no idea just how explosive the story will be until, on the eve of publication, the two investigating reporters are murdered. And even more shocking for Blomkvist: the fingerprints found on the murder weapon belong to Lisbeth Salander—the troubled, wise-beyond-her-years genius hacker who came to his aid in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and who now becomes the focus and fierce heart of The Girl Who Played with Fire.

As Blomkvist, alone in his belief in Salander’s innocence, plunges into an investigation of the slayings, Salander herself is drawn into a murderous hunt in which she is the prey, and which compels her to revisit her dark past in an effort to settle with it once and for all.

From the Hardcover edition.

Industry Reviews
"Fans of intelligent page-turners will be more than satisfied by Larsson's second thriller....Powerful prose and intriguing lead characters will carry...readers along."
(06/08/2009)

"What makes [THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE] outstanding is the author's ability to handle dozens of characters and parallel narratives without ever losing tension. Larsson was as vexed by misogyny as any author I've come across, but he was also a fantastic storyteller. This novel will leave readers on the edge of their seats."
(01/11/2009)

"Salander is only the most obvious attraction in Larsson's addictive fiction. His secret weapon is his straightforward, methodical, even expository style, most likely an adaptation from his nonfiction feature writing....[I]t makes the novel feel reported, as if it were the world's greatest true-crime narrative."

"FIRE remains superior to many mysteries, and Larsson's gifts are substantial."
(08/02/2009)

"THE GIRL WITH WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE confirms the impression left by DRAGON TATTOO. Here is a writer with two skills useful in entertaining readers royally: creating characters who are complex, believable and appealing even when they act against their own best interest; and parceling out information in a consistently enthralling way."
(07/27/2009)

"[The novel] boasts an intricate, puzzlelike story line that attests to Mr. Larsson's improved plotting abilities, a story line that simultaneously moves backward into Salander's traumatic past, even as it accelerates toward its startling and violent conclusion."

Book two of The Millenium Series by Stieg Larsson

Created: 09/28/10
The Girl Who Played With Fire is the second book of the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson and is one of the best pieces of literature I have read, or listened to, in years. The stories of Mikail Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander are so well written and so captivating that once you have reached the end of The Girl Who Played With Fire, you will definitely want to continue to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. After having completed the whole series, is it obvious that Larsson wrote the piece as one. This of course would make a huge book, perhaps larger than War and Peace, so breaking it up into a trilogy made it more accessible for the reader. Unfortunately, Larsson never lived to see the book being published.

The writing is so lush and detailed. The intrigue and mystery is punctuated with modern technology, computer hacking, and some nasty villians. In the second book of the series, the reader gets to know Lisbeth Salander better as her personal history is explored in greater detail. As the characters each take their own turns at life and death survival, the reader is kept in the grips of the suspense by the deft writing. Even now, a week after having completed the series, I am still left with a sense that the characters of the books are real people living in Stockholm.

Simon Vance is excellent in his reading of the books, showing a terrific vocal range in his portrayal of the characters. His being able to switch accents and vocal ranges, while maintaining each character's voice, is astounding.

The books have some repetition and the first book starts off a little slow, but once the action starts rolling, it never lets up. Each book is about 15 hours long and I was very disappointed when it was over. I have never gone back to listen to a book twice, this series might be the first.

The first two books of the series have been released as films. Read the books first since so much had to be cut out in order to squeeze the story down to two and a half hours.

Great story. Much better if you have already read Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Lizbeth Salander is one of those characters that you expect to see on the street or read about in the papers. She is that well crafted in the mind of the author.
