Movie synopsis
This documentary of the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour has become a legendary, harrowing symbol of the tragic demise of the "Peace and Love" era. After a successful tour across the United States, the Rolling Stones gave a free December concert at Altamont Speedway in California with the Grateful Dead (not seen performing), Ike and Tina Turner, Jefferson Airplane, and the Flying Burrito Brothers (all seen performing one song each). The poorly planned show was fraught with problems from its inception. The band unwisely selected the Hells Angels motorcycle club to provide security, and after the pre-existing chaos was fueled by very visible alcohol and drug abuse, the bikers resorted to violence to keep the stoned, restless, and often naked crowd in line. The result: dozens of injuries and the on-screen stabbing of a young African-American man (during "Sympathy for the Devil," no less) by one of the concert's "staff security." In a manipulative but effective move, the Maysles brothers and Charlotte Zwerin filmed Mick Jagger in the editing room witnessing the on-camera murder for the first time. But aside from that unexpected drama, the film also works as a rock-and-roll document, capturing the band at their most relaxed, intoxicating, and electrifying.

Music and accurate history of the Rolling Stones during their 1969 tour.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

A really great, must have history of the Rolling Stones 1969 tour which ended with the much talked about Altamont Speedway free concert. This film really gets to the truth of what happened at that particular concert, although I bought it to try to get more video of the Stones at Madison Square Garden where the Ya Ya's album was captured. The music in this video is good but fragmented. It is a pleasure to me as a guitar player to watch Keith and Mick (Taylor) play. In the end, as badly as the concert turned out with the death of the young man, it seems to be proved that the Hells Angels were only defending themselves and possibly Mick Jagger and the Stones from an attempted assassination.

Review For: Gimme Shelter (Blu-ray Disc, 2009, Criterion Collection)

Well 1st it's the Rolling Stones!!!
nuff said!
The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World at Altamont, preserved on Criterion for all time. This was an interesting festival, billed as Woodstock West it was supposed to go off without a hitch then the Stones hired the Hell's Angels for security & everything went south fast! 1 person died.
Excellent document of a good idea gone bad.
Buy it now!

Great concert and resulting tragedy !

A piece of history. The people behind the concert, and the groups who performed. The people who attended and the way we were. A great deal of insight into the making of the concert and the resulting tragedy.Worth watching.
