Movie synopsis
In the midst of a 1962 pleasure cruise, the passengers and crew of Italian luxury liner the Antonia Graza are systematically slaughtered and left in pieces by a gang of terrorists. Forty years later, the ship is spotted drifting in the Bering sea. Fresh off a six-month journey, an Alaska-based seafaring salvage team lead by Murphy (Gabriel Byrne) and Epps (Julianna Margulies) are approached by a Canadian weather spotter (Desmond Harrington) who noticed the derelict vessel on a flyover. Tempted by the possibility of untold riches, the crew takes on the job of tracking down the ship. Once aboard though, strange things start to happen, beginning with Epps's sighting of the ghost of a little girl. After the team finds a cache of gold, all hell breaks loose, and the angry ghosts make themselves known--and begin destroying the intruders one by one. Purely and simply a floating haunted house tale, GHOST SHIP is a creepy thrill ride that compensates for its lack of originality with some creepy art direction and a number of very grisly special effects. Director Steve Beck (13 GHOSTS) keeps things appropriately dark, and coaxes suitably world-weary performances from Gabriel Byrne and Julianna Margulies, who makes an appealing heroine.

Review Of Ghost Ship

Review For: Ghost Ship (DVD, 2003, Widescreen)

This film, written by Steve Beck (Of 13 GHOSTS fame), is set on an early 60s Italian Passenger Cruise ship whose passengers & crew are murdered by terrorist. Years later the ship is spotted by a weather spotter who convinces the captain of a salvage boat & his crew to track down the cruise boat and benefit from any riches it may have aboard.

After they find the cruise ship and board her, they discover a shipment of gold on board. The cruise ship ghosts become angry and start to kill the 'intruders' one at a time. The ghost of a little girl, murdered on the cruise ship, helps to save the only one that will survive.

Produced by Gilbert Adler, Robert Zemeckis, Joel Silver, Ghost Ship is a true thriller. Creepy, Mysterious, Spooky, & Intriguing.

There several neat and interesting history flashes in the script. Pay close attention to the referral of the Lusitania.

The role of Epps, the heroine, is played by Julianna Margulies and is the one who can see the little girl ghost, but nobody really believes her.

This is most certainly a haunted house type film on water, which adds special circumstances that could not exist if it were on land. (I do not want to spoil it for you - you have to get the DVD.)

I'm going to give this film a 5/5 for excellent special effects & ability to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Horror + Action Adventure = Ghost Ship

GHOST SHIP defies horror film convention: it opens with the bloodiest, goriest scene imaginable...and afterwards turns into an engrossing action-adventure flick about a crew attempting to salvage an abandoned ocean liner. In time there are ghosts, shootings, explosions, and two guys eating maggots, but nothing quite as horrific as the opening scene. That's actually a good thing. If you can get past what happens right at the beginning, you can concentrate on unravelling the mystery without fear of puking throughout the film. GHOST SHIP proves that a movie can be genuinely frightening without being a nonstop gorefest. The plot is so well-crafted that you will never see the surprise twist --- and after it hits you, you will realize that all the clues were there, if only you had recognized them! One of my all-time favorite scary movies. It will haunt you long after the closing credits.

Better than you Think

Steve Beck’s masterpiece, the second best film of the year, and one of the most beautiful expressions of a vision I have seen put on screen. It is the simple story of a salvage crew who, on a tip from a mysterious stranger, discover an abandoned ocean liner, the Antonia Graza. Predictably, soon start to go awry, but not in a predictable fashion. Rather, from the shocking and disturbing opening moments on, the film is a riveting ride. That’s it. While the characters are well-drawn, the acting is solid, etc… This is not a film which is excellent by ‘typical’ standards. It is simply the most fun I have ever had at a movie. It manipulates every emotion imaginable, from eroticism to horror to sadness to humor. It even has a moment of stunningly moving emotional power. If ever a film was the definition of the power of cinema to stir, this would be it.

good twist DVD

Review For: Ghost Ship (DVD, 2003, Widescreen)

Salvagers good an offer that turns out to be too good to be what it appears. A salvage crew is offered the salvage opertunity of a lifetime. The ghost ship is located and the crew start dying in the first minutes of the film. Then when you think its all over, everything old is new again. I would give away what happens in the end. But, you will be surprised.

Ghost Ship

Review For: Ghost Ship (DVD, 2003, Widescreen)

The plot is shallow and the acting by the team of scavengers is poor. There are many gramatical errors in Italian. The most annoying error was "12 knots an hour," which is redundant. However, there is one scene of simple brilliance. "I want to show you something.." and the viewer is launched into an intense flashback. I absolutely adore said scene. Besides that there are a few decent flashback scenes and the rest is mediocre. It is a decent movie to get out every once in a while. The ending does have a bit of a spin. It does not deserve it's insanely low rating. Not worth paying full price.
