Reviews & Research

CNET Editors' reviewGood

  • THE GOOD

The Garmin Nuvi 750 portable navigation system features text-to-speech functionality and useful location features that help you find nearby services. The system also has a wide screen, a built-in transmitter, and other travel tools.

  • THE BAD

The Nuvi 750 was occasionally sluggish to alert us to turns and with route recalculations. It's also a bit pricey.

  • THE BOTTOM LINE

The Garmin Nuvi 750 delivers beautifully on almost every front, but the portable navigation system hits a speed bump with its sluggish performance.

GARMIN VERSUS TOM TOM

I just bought this model on ebay. I have read plenty of reviews and it is always written from the view of someone "new" to a GPS unit. You read things like, I can know reach my destinations better", well, duh! So I am not going to rate this model based on NO GPS. Also, I have not tried every GPS out there as well. I have a Tom Tom XL-S. I been a loyal Tom Tom guy, this was the 2nd one, but the battery life sucks. I always wanted a Garmin, know they equip airlines etc. The Garmin is superior to the Tom Tom, ease of use, more compact and slimmer I placed it on the left hand side, impossible with the Tom TOM. Takes up too much room, need to be placed in the middle of the windshield. Tom Tom is clunky and very heavy. Factory holder cannot support them also. The Garmin is way better in finding POI's., police, etc. Acquisition time was crucial. I often need to find address quickly, Tom Tom took forever. I literally had to warm up the car and GPS in the garage, the Garmin located things much better. Also, worked in the garage, Tom TOM cannot locate itself in closed areas. Very accurate too. Tom Tom is more customizable, but I can live with that. The FM transmitter is nice, but it is static prone, GARMIN FACTORY mount is superior as well. Garmin found plenty of new places in my area, which also included their phone numbers, organized much nicer into groups, Tom Tom has a search option, but you literally have to scroll through every place that has the word "Italian" rather than search for "Italian" restaurants. Garmin has A LONGER BATTERY LIFE AS WELL, TOM TOM IS SO SUCKY, NOW IT ONLY WORKS WITH THE POWER CABLE ATTACHED TO IT. Be like me, switch over to the Garmin. Also, this model has more options than the 255W etc. I bought this one for the FM transmitter. Sucky it did not work like I thought, it works, but not like I envisioned. Overall, its a great GPS, I felt Tom TOM cheated me from so many years of buying power cables, battery that keep dying, lousy customer service etc. I remember 6 years ago when I was buying my 1st GPS, I should have went with the Garmin like I wanted to. I paid close to $400 for this unit. The new Tom Toms continue having problems with their mounts as well. With their built in GPS units, you really cannot put them into your pocket. Compare their best units to Garmins, Garmins are light years away, Garmin just introduced this super ultra thin GPS unit, looks out of this world. Its super ultra thin. BTW, Garmin is superior to any other GPS manufacturers as well. Magellan, best Buy brand, etc.

Garmin Nuvi 750 GPS

Very good product for the money. I've enjoyed using my Garmin 750 car GPS since my purchase. I'm still learning all it's features. I do a lot of local and out of state driving and the GPS does come in handy for many of these trips. I would have never found a few of my destinations without my unit. A recent trip to New York city made my trip in and out of New York a pure pleasure. With all the traffic in that city, my GPS payed for it self on this one trip alone. I would recommend having one for any long distance travel. A great unit to have.

It does the job, and that's all I ask.

The Garmin NUVI 750 GPS is an older generation version of the NUVI 760/765, lacking only BlueTooth capability (which I neither need nor want). Mine is a factory-refurbished unit. I was looking for a reasonably priced, reliable alternative to the GPS capabilty available on my cell phone. This is it. I find it to be extremely accurate and reliable and a godsend when trying to navigate my way to unfamiliar places. It frequently knows routes to places I've traveled to many times which are shorter than my normal routes. The display is large, clear and bright, even in bright daylight conditions. It seems to insist on giving you the shortest route by default, unless you tell it to do otherwise, occasionally making turns onto winding connector roads that I would normally avoid. A few minor gripes: after a long stretch of non-use, it takes several minutes (and miles) to reacquire the satellites. This can be very inconvenient if you are starting off from an unfamiliar place. It also sometimes misses turns (i.e. no voice prompt) that appear to it to be continuations of the same road. I've also found that it is not 100% accurate as to exact physical locations. For instance, it says my house is located a good quarter mile from where it actually is, and recently wanted to send me over a mile up the street from an actual hospital entrance. I attribute this to the mapping software being used, which, if it is anything like Mapquest or Google, can be very inaccurate at times. All-in-all, a great purchase and I'd do it again.

Excellent multi-destination car nav

I'm a long-time satisfied Garmin customer. My first GPS was a Garmin 45 handheld in the '80s. My first car GPS was a Garmin i2. The one feature of the i2 which I will miss is using 2 AA batteries when away from the car, or when the 12v lighter outlet dies, etc. It fits the same mounts as my i2, and I prefer a Garmin portable dash mount.

The large touch screen display is great. The user interface (menu navigation, etc.) is not absolutely how I would have done it myself, but usually pretty close. It's fine to use without even reading the manual.

Assume the device and user interface are nearly perfect except for the things I mention. The number of things which are ingenius and work far better than you have any right to expect, are too numerous to list.

My pet peeve is the lack of a "go immediately back to the map" button once you are down in the menus, preferably with a button on the map to toggle back to where you were at in the menus. I hate being in the middle of naming a saved waypoint or perusing a list of all Citizens Banks, and having to choose between ditching it to use the map for an upcoming turn, or having to navigate totally by trusting the voice. Not every "keep right on Main Street in 0.2 miles" means the same thing. It's good to see the map when looking out the windshield at a 6-way fork in the road! Sometimes it takes hitting the "back" button many times until the main menu screen comes up, then having to hit the "map" icon. Just put a map button on EVERY screen!

Similarly, zooming in and out one level at a time using just + and - buttons is slow...a zoom scale with all the choices, or at least a choice of zooming several levels at once would be better.

The little "turn maps" shown when reviewing future turns, don't follow your map orientation configuration, and aren't "North up" either. Why they chose to apparently orient the map of a turn 100 miles ahead, in some seemingly random direction (maybe my current heading which changes as I go around each curve in the road...or maybe the average heading since the previous little "turn map"?), baffles me. Maybe I should read the manual.

The v9 maps on my 750 are more up to date than the v7 maps on my i2.

The 750 finds optimal routes extremely well, including choosing the fastest way to hit multiple intermediate destinations ("via points") on the way to a final destination. Or you can build/enter your own routes with waypoints. It recalculates in a flash after you deviate or detour.

But on a 14-hour trip, adding a via point along the route (even a McDonalds 5 miles ahead), sometimes let it find even better routes for the remaining part of the trip than it initially had, and bring the ETA down. So on long trips, doing that (and not necessarily actually taking the exit to McD) or canceling/restarting navigation every hour or two, to recalculate the remaining route to your final destination, might help.

I bought it Garmin-refurbished. It was flawless, except the battery had apparently not been discharged/recharged enough by the previous owner and lost capacity. The first time I unplugged it, it ran 7 minutes. 2nd time 37 minutes. 5th time 2h15m. I may ask for a new battery, depending upon how well it performs after I experiment some more.

I haven't tried any of the music, photo, or "voice through car-radio" features yet.

I consider the Garmin Nuvi 750 a great bargain.

Garmin Nuvi 750

I decided to buy it because of favorable reviews in consumers reports.
Like another Nuvi I had owned, it will always get you where you to go, but often by an inefficient route. As a test I set it to direct me from a familiar location back to my home. I've taken the trip Many times and I KNOW the most efficient path. It tried to send me by an indirect and slower path, so I ignored its instruction. It promptly said it was "recalculating" and tried to divert me back to the path it had originally chosen. At every intersection, it tried to "correct" me to its preferred path. It must have "corrected" me a half dozen times. When I finally got very close to home, it finally selected the path that was efficient. But by then I was only a half mile from home, and didn't really need anymore help. Its adequate but not much more than that. Next time I'm going to try a different brand.
