I just love my new Garmin 5" screen navigation system. I bought it to replace a broken Garmin 2" screen Navigator which we used for well over 10 years, it was used often! I will enjoy the lifetime map addition as our old one did not have this feature!
The window suction mount is much better than my previous one, I thought that I would need to buy a new friction base mount but that isn't the case!
The five inch screen is a blessing as it is much easier to see! The split screen is nice but I don't look at it much because the system tells me way ahead of time on the Interstate which exit number to take.
I also think that the showing of all the street names I am about to go through is an added plus and prevents me from turning too soon! I have yet to get lost so I don't know if it will tell me "recalculating" as the past unit did. I found that on my older version that the "recalculating" warning did get on my nerves!
I purchased the navigator also because we moved from Connecticut to Oklahoma. Nothing worse than not knowing how to get around!
Navigating the unit with new addresses and the set up was a breeze! The only down side that I can think of is that in some circumstances the search for new locations took a bit too much time an example was doing a broad based search as "cigar shops!". If you know the name of a business or you have an address, the search time is fast!
I have only owned Garmin products so I can't compare it to other Navigation Systems. Once I find a good product I tend to stay with the same brands!
Happy Navigating!
We bought this instead of buying an update for our 7 year old Garmin because this comes with free lifetime updates. It is easy to use and some of the special features such as split screen showing the Garmin map and what the exit looks like are nice. The speed limit function seems to be spot on. We did find a couple of spots where the Garmin was wrong--suspect the interchanges had changed after the last time they had updated the maps but there was no problem with the recovery route provided. All in all a well designed, good product.
Shipping was prompt as well.
This model 30 works fine for me it was a refurbished, like new when it come from the seller, and with life time updates it should last me a long time other than my first Garmin which had only one update, has ample lane changeing time quite a few settings, speed limit is great, for one who does not travel a great lot and is still used to reading a map, it is great, does not have all the fancy bell and whistles but this is what I need for my travel needs, it gives you all the info you need to get there, you can zoom it in and out, to a large state wide map down to street to street and gives you the next street you will turn on and also had a divided screen for shot that are real look alikes. Like any other when you get it it takes a bit of time to register, upload, update install, go thru it's features and set it up to your need and wants, does not have a memory card but so far I feel I have all the memory that I need, just as it comes set up for the southern 48, if you need you reset and set up for the upper 48 or the island states, If you are a long haul trucker buy a model 50, has one external switch on/off all else is set up in your computer, came with all the cables and a windscreen mount, applyed correctly, clean cup and windsreen won't fall off and commit sucide on a rough road or crossing rough railway tracks. A piece of advice for any of you for you and your families safty, when you set it up to take you home when you push the home icon, do not use your real address make it several miles away, abandon bldg or lot or police station, just in case is lost or stolen, makes sense to me. The detail is very good, sound adjustable, adjustable for your day and night preferences If you like it will display elevation relevitive bearing avg speed, so all in all a niffty navigator.
This unit is replacing an older Garmin unit that the maps have long been obsolete.
I went with the strip down Garmin 50LM this time with the life time map upgrades; no fancy bells and whistles that I never used anyway.
The unit works superb, I enjoy the lane you need to be in feature along with the posted speed limit, both are very useful in unfamiliar places, hence the reason we purchase devices like this.
I kinda miss the re-calculating information of my older unit (can't believe I actually am saying that) because I would then know right away I was off course. This newer unit just continues to tell you to make the next calculated turn without indicating I missed a turn.
This is not necessarily a bad thing, it's just not what I'm accustomed to hearing.
So, if you do not need or use all the fancy features that the upper end GPS's offer, this is a pretty sweet unit; love the larger screen also.
It still has plenty of options and points of interest, I didn't mean to suggest it had no other usable options, it has plenty, just not as many as more expensive units.
I am planning on buying this same unit for family members and friends.
I am a map girl - a dinosaur, so buying this product was a big step for me. The reason for purchasing the Garmin Nuvi 50 was because all my friends have a GPS of some sort, and I figured it might serve me someday. I researched all the GPS's out there and Garmin had the best ratings and customer reviews. I learned the Traffic alerts contained annoying pop-up ads and the Bluetooth sound wasn't clear so, I decided, based on what I really needed a GPS for, a basic unit would be best, and this one received high marks across the board. I've had it for a couple of months now. I don't use it much, but when I have it has delivered. The 5" screen is great for my 50+ year old vision. It is easy to see all roads and intersections and I was even able to choose a red vehicle to represent my red one. The device alerts me to speed limits on roads on which I can't find any sign. I chose a British gent to deliver my turn-by-turn directions - he is so sexy! The points of interest loaded in the Garmin have been helpful when I've needed to find a store in an area I was unfamilair with. I haven't found anything to dislike about this product yet, but I have a feeling there will not be any. All-in-all the Garmin is easy to use; it is easy to mount on the windshield, as well as remove. The battery life seems ok, but as I said earlier, I haven't used it much yet, and I remove it as soon as I am at my destination. As far as price, the Garmin Nuvi 50 is a great value and one of the least expensive. I looked through all the auctions on eBay and searched Amazon (who have the best reviews to read through) before making my choice. I purchased from a seller on eBay at a great price. I believe I paid $108 for a new, in-box Garmin. I highly recommend this product, but I also recommend you make a list of what is important to you in a GPS and do your own research. I'm thankful to all consumers who review their product choices.
