The compact Garmin Nüvi 350 has a strong GPS receiver and includes lots of travel-friendly features.
The Garmin Nüvi 350 is expensive, and the traffic receiver and the travel-guide programs cost extra. The Nüvi also lacks an external volume control.
No bigger than a deck of cards, the Garmin Nüvi 350 is more than just another voice-guided GPS device, packing in travel tools, entertainment features, and good performance; just be prepared to pay a price.

For the past few years, when I rent a car (mostly from Hertz), I opt for the "Neverlost" GPS -- a pretty lame GPS, but one that usually gets me where I need to go. However, with recent economic shifts, I actually looked at the cost (like $10+ per day), and decided to do some research as to what it would cost me to get my own portable GPS.
On a price/performance basis, a "factory reconditioned" nuvi 350 -- which listed new for over $800, and can be bought on ebay for about $110 -- was a no-brainer. I could (and did) pay for the unit by the end of my second use of a rental car.
The unit was in its original factory box, and was in like-new condition. It is very user-friendly, and as someone who has been using GPS nav for over 10 years, I was up and running in about 3 minutes.
I love the software -- the nuvi is easier to use, and has better POI and new address interfaces than either my Porsche or my BMW GPS's. I also like the fact that I can take the nuvi to my room and do route loading and planning for my next days' activities.
I recently hooked it up to the Garmin website, and found out I had a free download, so I downloaded a 2010 US database.
The only complaint is that, it turns out, CA is one of two states in which it is not legal to connect your GPS to your windshield. While the unit comes with a base plate that you can glue to your dash, that obviously won't work on a rental car. So, I will have to take my chances with the law.
One other thing -- in San Francisco last week, the nuvi couldn't track the GPS sat's in the downtown (California Street) corridor. I'm not certain that my other GPS's would fare better, but you should be aware that for city driving, there could be some dead spots.
I purchased the garmin 350 because it was reasonably price and has a good reputation. The one I purchased is used but is working like new. I had been using the gps on my phone but decided to go with the 350 because I felt it was unsafe to have to keep looking at my phone while driving. The 350 is great it reminds you when to turn and it says the name of the street. I'm very happy that I purchase it and would recommend it to all that need a reliable accurate way to get directions to anywhere. The 350 may not be the latest technology but it does a lot of good things. Thanks again
This product is very good to get you around on the road as well if you are walking within a city. I took this item to Montreal last month and it was amazing when coming to directions. The voice directions is one of it's best features. Keeps your eyes on the road, and gives you enough time when coming to turns. Cons: The sounds gets annoying sometimes. Also if buying used make sure the seller is able to transfer the registeration over to your name.

I absolutely love my Garmin!! I love the small size of it so that it won't get in your way while driving, but it's still large enough to see. I am so impressed with the Garmin Company. I bought mine used and ended up having trouble with it and called the Garmin Company. They didn't care that I bought it used. They treated me just like a new customer and I didn't pay a cent. They practically rebuilt it for me free of charge. They said it appeared to be corrupt by an sd card I put in to update it. Then they had me to register it in case I needed help in the future!! I am absolutely hooked on Garmin products from here on out!! The Garmin 350 is just the best. My husband has a larger one, but I prefer mine over his and I purchased one like my for my son for Christmas!! You can't go wrong with Garmin!!!
My buddy recently got a Garmin 250 and was very pleased with it. I tried to buy one also but the company would not accept my US VISA card. I then found a Garmin 350 on eBay and checked google to find out more. Two things showed up immediately. One is the 350 has a flip out patch antenna which is much bigger than the thin antenna in the 250. This indicates the reception would be much better, especially in the city with tall buildings. The other item that stood out was the 350 has Text To Talk, which is a voice alert that names the street you need to turn on next. These seemed to be very nice features, so I went ahead and bought it.
The first thing I found when it arrived was how easy it was to get started. I didn't need to refer to the user manual until much later when I forgot how to set a parameter. The documentation is very clear and I had no trouble finding the item I was looking for.
The performance is outstanding. Although it is meant for vehicle use, I walked several blocks away and told it to tell me how to get home. It was absolutely amazing. The unit knew exactly where I was, and where home was. It monitored how fast I was walking and predicted when I would arrive. The alerts went in 0.1 mile increments, then switched to 50 foot increments at 0.1 mile. It showed that I reached home at the same time I reached the building, then it took me another 50 feet up the driveway and directly to my entrance door. I though this was phenomenal.
The next trick was I needed to find out where a street address was. This is impossible to find out on a map. But the Garmin helped all the way through the process by showing the relevant cities and street names as soon as it had the first few characters. Data entry is extremely easy with this unit. I am a programmer and I am very impressed with the quality of the software. It is outstanding.
The icing on the cake was when I showed it to my friend in his apartment. We started both units at the same time. My 350 came up immediately and showed 6 or 8 satellites. His 250 could not find a single satellite, even after five or ten minutes. So the flip out antenna really makes a difference.
I am extremely pleased with the unit and I am looking forward to getting some very good use soon looking for a home to rent. I think it will be indespensable.
