Expert navigator, traffic avoider, and more.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

For simply wanting a tool to help me get from location to location, I got that and much more. While I can't offer a comparison against other products, I do wish to point out some strong and weak points of this GPS.

The GPS comes with an ease-of-use design to help you get information you need ASAP. What I find helpful about this is in situations where you need to find something in your area but you don't exactly know where it is. Using tools such as Points of Interest, Cities, Intersection, Parking, or Where am I will help you find anything from the nearest doughnut shop to the nearest police station.

Also included are tools to make your drive faster, more efficient, or more pleasant. Device settings let you specify calculation for faster drive time, shorter distance, less fuel, prompted (whatever that means), or off road. Avoidances help you specify what you want to avoid when your GPS navigates. Options include U-Turns, Highways, Toll Roads, Traffic (more on this in a moment), Ferries, Carpool Lanes, and Unpaved Roads.

Also included natively are two methods of getting around traffic. The first is a no-cost feature which I think doesn't provide as much avoidance as it does recognition of specific events at certain times. myTrends will pick up on traffic trends based on a comparison of your speed versus the known speed limit for the road you're driving on. However, this requires you drive through the traffic a few times before myTrends picks up on it.

I much prefer the second option which costs some money. I purchased a lifetime traffic receiver (GTM35) which plugs into your car's 12V DC cigarette lighter and connects to the back of your Garmin's car mount. It's basically the same as the car charger which comes with the GPS. The only difference is the charger supplies traffic data to your GPS.

CAUTION: As with anything GPS, traffic warnings are extremely distracting! Please, and I stress the importance of this, DO NOT attempt to view traffic information while driving! It's as bad as texting and driving which is why retrieving traffic information is a major down-side of this GPS. In order to see traffic information, you have to:
1. Press the traffic icon.
2. Press View Traffic icon.
3. Read the traffic info for traffic distance, location, and time.
4. (optional) Decide if this will impact you and if you want to try a shorter route.

If you absolutely have to know what's out there while driving, have a passenger press the buttons and read the info to you.

As for the up-side... If the GPS knows of an alternate route which will get you there faster than going through the traffic jam, it will automatically recalculate and start navigating you on a new route around the traffic. Within one month of usage, this device saved me nearly 2 hours worth of driving in traffic! That's well worth the price tag as it pays for itself in saved fuel.

Unfortunately, with all these tools, there's very little storage space. This the the final down-side to this GPS as I found myself having to remove language text files from my GPS to facilitate GPS database updates from Garmin. You'd think Garmin would ensure there's enough space for their own updates, but that's not always true.

All-in-all, this is a great GPS and gets the job done if you're out to navigate. In addition, you have a lot of nifty tools to help you along the way. Please don't forget, driving is not the time to play around with these tools and discover what they do.

Good for the Price I Paid

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

Wish it had custom route feature, it is easier to configure with a custom route feature. You have to use trip planner to create a custom route and it is a little tricky if your not a little used to programing gadgets. When you use trip planner you pick a place in between your starting point and final destination and choose add to route. Pick a place on a straight away instead of an intersection because when you get to that specific spot you travel thru it and then it gives the gps time to set its sight on the next location you choose, if you had picked an intersection and say you needed to turn at that intersection the gps would need a few seconds to set its sight on next location to tell you to turn, so its best to set the add to route locations before any turns or intersections. I have also read that you can't use mapsource to create a custom route and load it on to the gps, have not tried that yet but the posts I was reading were dated 10/2012, maybe it works know. If I hadn't got it so cheap from Garmin($65free shipping) I probably would look for one with custom route feature or 1 I know would accept Mapsource. Thanks overall average for the price I paid-only needed custom routes for daughter to and from college to take her through less traffic conditions and slower driving-she drives like grandma-not complaining though-so if you see a slow driving female driver, don't cuss her cause it could be your daughter one day Thanks

Lifetime maps was the main selling point for me.

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I have a Garmin 1200 that has served me well, and still works flawlessly, but the maps on it are more than two years old.
The 2300LM (refurbished by Garmin) was at a rock-bottom price ($65, free shipping, no sales tax), easily a better solution than a map upgrade. So it's a prior-year model, and will probably be discontinued soon, but that's OK.
I haven't used it a lot yet, but operationally it's almost identical to the 1200. The differences I've noticed so far are:
Wider screen. That's nice.
It seems to pick up and hold the satellites better in difficult situations, like inside the house.
The charger plugs in the cradle, not the unit. I can see that might be a problem in some circumstances, but I like it better. I just leave the charger connected now, and move the unit in and out of the cradle, for a one-step operation.

It came with the latest maps, so I haven't needed to download new maps. I assume an SD card will be required when I attempt that, so I bought a card on eBay for about a third of the Garmin price.
You have to use the lifetime maps feature from time to time to prevent it from expiring, so I put a reminder on my 2013 calendar to upgrade the maps next December. Maybe I'll do it before then, but I don't want to forget completely.

Bottom line, it's a nice navigator at a great price. The big question now is whether navigators in general will remain viable as more drivers choose to use the cell phone instead.

The Garmin nuvi 2300LM, it's super accurate, no more leaving bread crumbs!

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

I bought this Garmin nuvi 2300LM after I moved and couldn't find my older Garmin nuvi 350.I purchased my 350 in 2007 at a cost of $477.00. I was shocked to see how much they have come down in price. The 350 wasn't that good, it used to bring us to vacant lots, farm roads through the woods, and map updates were way too expensive. The 2300 is easier to use, way more accurate, and map updates are free.I have used it several times now and it has been right on the money every time. My wife and I love it and we would recommend it to anyone.

I Get Around With Garmin Nuvi 2300 LM GPS

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

My work truck is an older model that does not include a GPS. My work takes me all over the place serving clients. Until finding and purchasing the Garmin Nuvi 2300LM I was at the mercy of MapQuest and/or printed DeLome maps, which always seem to have you make a left when you needed to make a right or some other error!?! The Nuvi comes with Lifetime Maps, so I will always be updated through the web site support. I looked at other brands, such as Magellan and Tom Tom, but for the money, features and reliability went with Garmin. This particular unit has preformed perfectly to date and is just what I needed to insure my timely arrival for my customers. Fantastic support and current real time traffic updates are a plus for the unpredictable nature of motorists these days and the ever present accidents that always cause major delays! It is nice to be able to find alternate routes that may be available at a moments notice! Garmin has great online support and each unit can be totally customized. 5 out of 5 Stars as far as I'm concerned! Good Investment.
