Now this is one fine GPS and I've buying them since Delorme days. I think we have 6 of them. My last was a Motorola, well other than the aircraft one. Big screen is nice. Plenty of room for user choice of data displays. Favorite features: not having it route me through city alleys to go cross country. In fact I think if you have a favorite route, it remembers that and takes you that way next time. The points of interest list. If you have some idea of where you are going and a name you can ask for a list of near you or near your destination. it will give you the hotels, or government buildings, florist whatever. Just select one and you are on your way. We left for Philly the other day and forgot our reservation at home. She knew the cross streets, in seconds I had a list of hotels, that jogged her memory, I made a call to confirm it was the right one, bingo. We didn't need to head back for the paper. It has lane guidance with images, is that nice!! And it picks up satellites almost as fast as an aviation GPS. Our Daughter has a Garmin and loves it, so when we decided to upgrade we focused on them. I love using the optional Darth Vader voice. the Bluetooth phone works fine. Traffic guidance? I don't see it working, so no comment. The one problem I have is the memory is too small. I couldn't get firmware updates or new voices loaded into the memory. The additional memory card is only for personal aps like music. You have to dump things like Help in Afgan to update it. I think some people would have trouble doing that, but it was cake for me.
I purchased this unit as a replacement for Garmin's 765 model, which worked well until the connector for the power cord detached from the unit. I was happy to see the 1490LMT has a standard mini USB connector port that shouldn't break (as least as easily).
The 1490LMT has a 5" display, about 3/4 of an inch larger than the old model. That may not sound like much but it makes a big difference. The display is clear and readable, and the new model does a much better job of displaying complicated intersections and showing the driver which lane he/she needs to be in.
Menus are intuitive and allow the user to customize settings including brightness, volume, contrast, time/distance to location - along with many other features. Having the lifetime map upgrade feature and realtime traffic is a real plus - particularly in an urban area with plenty of construction and traffic challenges.
Only mild complaint is the unit occasionally throws out a route which isn't the best. The routes always work, but the unit may not pick the best one. This has improved over my previous 765 model - maybe it will be "perfect" when it comes time to get the next one!
Good buy for the money, in this user's opinion.
With all of the road construction that has been on going, I needed a way to avoid the long lines & delays, while traveling to other states. As I am NOT a NEW gaget person, I needed something that was easy to operate--right out of the box. The direction folder led me outside & within a matter of seconds, I was operating my NEW & first GPS. I was able to enter some of the information I needed & I was off to my first destination. Out of the box was the plug in for the cigarette lighter. There was also a plugin for my computer & the GPS stand.
The nice thing about the Garmin nuvi 1490LMT GPS unit is--if I don't like the route, I can go my own way & the Garmin will automatically change the route-instantly. The GPS voice will inform me where to turn--giving me street names & distance. The GPS will tell me if I missed a turn, even though I want to follow a different route, as I said before, it will instantly change my route for me.
The 5 Inch touchscreen is wonderfully clear & bright. The GPS voice can be adjusted-up or down & I can heard the GPS voice over the radio. Bluetooth wireless technology for hands free calling. Lifetime updates for maps & traffic for FREE.
If I could talk to the unit & make changes, without touching the screen or add the spelling of cities, streets, or routes, that would make it easier for a person, such as myself, to move forward without pulling off of the road.
All in all, I have used my GPS on 5 different occasions, the longest trip was 300 miles through road construction & detours & I survived nicely. Thanks
Had a rough start with my unit. It took a few hours to download and install the updates, then it took about 5 minutes to find satellites for the first several startups. It seems to be settled in now and is up and running in about 15 seconds with no issues for guidance. I needed to use it that day and hadn't planned on so much effort to use the unit.
I've become accustomed to the Alpine-based Navigation systems in my vehicles and this doesn't compare to them at all. But, a $100-ish unit shouldn't be able to compare to a $1500+ unit. People should realize that when they buy handheld units like this - it isn't going to be as good, fast, or precise as a completely installed system.
HOWEVER, having said that, this is one of the better units available. It's easy to use, gets me where I'm going, and the screen is bright with a great display of the map/route. The voice alerts are clear and it uses street names. Upcoming turns are given well in advance. The layout is easy to follow and can be customized (take the time to read the manual). The touchscreen is adequate and does the job. It's large and has a wide viewing area. There's a good list of POIs and re-routes are calculated quickly.
Overall, it does what it's supposed to do. It's not perfect, but it really is a very good unit. Everyone I've recommended it to has also loved the unit.
I bought this GPS for my wife as a birthday gift since she is prone to getting lost so often. It works great and picks up directions very quickly. I looked at the Garmin 90 series because of the bluetooth feature. The bluetooth is pretty good but not great. The voice clarity is not as good as my cars bluetooth device nor my in-ear device. The maps are pretty accurate but have some missing areas even with the latest map updates. Be sure to purchase a separate SD card if you want the most complete maps of North America. All-in-all this is a great device. The screen size makes looking at the maps very simple. The traffic feature seems to be more hit than miss on most occasions (I was expecting a little better functionality). This GPS is a good value for the price. I would definitely purchase it again and recommend it for the amount of money you pay.
