This is a great GPS but because of its 2D maps it would not by some be considered one of the big boys. It functions very much like a portable Streetpilot 3. The Streetpilot3 was a brick and could not find a home on hardly any dashboard. The mini pilot can hand from the rear view mirror or sid on a console. Because it's display is monochrome it is very easy to read. It signal acquisition time is fair but one has to wait about a minute. What makes it able to soar with the Big Boys? As i said it depend on your use. I use it both on my sailboat and bicycle. It has programmable routes and waypoints. It also tracks elevation and when combined with elavation at beginning and ending speed on incline angle can be calculated. The newer Garmans like the Nuvi do not. This allows one to go into the sea make a rout and find your way back or to use waypoints to buoy's or other points of destination. With these two functions one could sail to almost any place on the globe. it also gives current latitude and longitude make the handheld truly a navigation help for sailor of hiker. Because it tracks distance between points one can route a trip on the cycle. It will tell you how fast one is going, how far one has gone, ave speed one has been going. It does much more. For the sportsman this remains a great machine.
It must be noted to have street level maps the Mapsource Metroguide is a necessity, To use this a Garman Date Chip will need to be acquired and to use maps and Data Chips it is almost necessary to have USB chip programmer. The unit comes with a USB cable and one can program the chip while in the GPS but it takes a long time. So when buying a Garman eMAP factor the cost of these into the final purchase price. It still is a bargain if you have a need for these extra navigational features.

THE PROGRAM IS VERY OLD MY P.C. DOEN'T HAVE A COM PORT TO USE THE PROGRAM. I ONLY HAVE USB. AND SO FAR I HAVE NOT GOT IT TO WORK.
COM to USB converters are quite common and inexpensive these days. Garmin even sells one, try GPSGEEK on ebay. I do not have a COM on my notebook, although my desktop is pretty muck loaded w/ everything - and I have a converter for the notebook. Plug in simple, and you are ready to go.
The eMap is a great unit I bought one at "full retail!" when they debuted, and another a couple years down the road - much cheaper. This unit does not disappoint.
Garmin has disc. the eMap, but it still supports it. A wealth of updates, videos, manuals, etc are available online at Garmin, as well - the eMap page is still up as though current, just has a disc. note on it. Full info and help is still available for this unit.
Do not let this one pass you buy, it is a great unit.
The Garmin eMap Deluxe with Metroguide GPS Receiver is an excellent handheld GPS for the money. The manufacturer has installed many user-friendly features that make the first time buyer or the professional happy. They manufacturer has excellent customer service and many additional add-ons to make this unit an extremely versatile GPS to be used in town, on trips, hunting, fishing, cycling, hiking, four wheeling or camping.
1. One of the best ways to protect investment is to purchase a Protective Case for this GPS. You can find a top of the in line protective case that protects while allowing full viewing and access to all the features of your GPS unit. See a variety of cases at: http://stores.ebay.com/FIS4HER1-COM_W0QQssPageNameZL2
2. Purchase cable accessories that allow you to upload or download maps and data from your GPS. Purchase a 12v auto charger so that you can always keep you unit charged before heading out cross-country. Purchase quality power and data cables at: http://stores.ebay.com/FIS4HER1-COM_W0QQssPageNameZL2
3. Purchase an Amplified External GPS Antenna for the unit. The internal antenna is ok but will become intermittent in high buildings, cloudy skies and stormy weather. Purchase a quality, high gain remote antenna. See specification on 28dB and 55dB GPS antenna at:

Great all around gps. Easy to use on or off the road. It is about the size of a calculator so it fits nicely in your hand. Excellent for biking on the road when attached to handle bars with mount attachment. A nice big screen so it is easy to see.
I have had this unit for over a year now. I never travel without it. The zoom in & out functions are wonderful. The software I use is MapSource USA and Metroguide North ver5. Combining these two software allows me to find restaurants, shopping locations, intersections, landmarks, physical addresses, etc.
I would highly recommend this unit to anyone wanting to use a true GPS unit. I have actually taken on the planes with me, held up to the window to determine my altitude, speed, and location....kinda fun that way.
Although the screen is not in color, I'm still able to view the screen and maps easily.
You won't be disappointed with this unit. Good solid device. One caution I would have is to be careful connecting the cable to the unit, should you break off the surrounding plastic piece, you will have future problems with connectivity and keeping the unit powered up if you use the car pwr adapter.
Otherwise, a solid piece device.
