If you like Metallica's older material, you're gonna love this collection! The first disc is comprised of newly covered tracks from bands that inspired Metallica. Black Sabbath, Bob Seger, Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, and Lynyrd Skynyrd are amongst the bands Metallica pays tribute to, but with Metallica's signature hard-hititng vocals and guitar & bass riffs. I especially enjoy the new take on the songs that were originally much softer, such as Blue Oyster Cult's "Astronomy," Bob Seger's "Turn the Page," and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone." Hetfield approaches these songs with alot of confidence and gives them a heavier sound, but remains true to the originals in a way that fans of the original classic rock versions will enjoy as well.
The second disc is the Garage Days Revisited album, which is nearly impossible to find by itself anymore. It is also a collection of covered material, but this is from the old days when Metallica was just a garage band starting out. If you like the old Metallica albums like Kill Em All, Ride the Lightning, or ...And Justice For All, this disc is for you!
I think this one of the best albums metallica ever released after the Load , Re-load period , even if its not actually a new album its a collection of cover did by Metallica in their history , songs like Am I Evil (Diamond Head cover ) , Sabbra Cadabra (Black Sabbath cover) , Die Die My Darling (Misfits cover ) , Loverman (Nick Cave cover) , Turn the page (Bob Seger cover) , Whiskey In The Jar (Thin Lizzy cover) , and lot more .
I apreciate this album because some of the covers sound way better than the original versions , and covers like Am I Evil , Breadfan remind me of the early Metallica period , anyway its for sure worth the money(thats why i bought it , its a need-to-have for old Metallica Fans )
What i dont like about it is the period in which it was released, and i cant give it 5point rating cause this isnt a act of creation its just about interpretation .
I'm 49 yrs old and I tend to like listening to "classic rock"-the stuff I listened to as a much younger man.But thanks to XM Radio,I heard a few tracks off this one,and really loved them. Most notably Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey In The Jar" ,and Blue Oyster Cult's "Astronomy" (a high school favorite of mine). Also good were Bob Seger's "Turn The Page" and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone".There's 2 discs in this set,the second one contains some Motorhead covers and one of the filthiest ,and vile songs ever "So What".They actually played that on XM Radio too.I nearly choked on my coffee, that day.A lot of filler in here, too, but you are sure to find a lot to like. And I shopped around for this and picked up a used copy here on ebay for 3 bucks!Money well spent.Buy this one,and enjoy
What is there NOT to love about this set? I got the two-cassette box set and the only way to listen is LOUD. These veteran rockers rock the sweat offa ya, to say the least. I love the first song being first "Free Speech For the Dumb"... all of the tracks are HOT, I love the clever to cynical lyrics and the hard and fast pace of most of their works. But even when it slows down, no getting off THAT ride. "Whiskey In the Jar" was one of the first tracks that decided me to buy but many of their tracks well known, from their spot on "Mandatory Metallica" on the radio. "Turn the Page," is one of my faves, from Seger's days and now Metallica. I hear stuff about the more modern Metallica being not as good as their earlier stuff, but I see nothing to complain of here, this is CLASSIC stuff and a lot of bang for the buck. I love Hetfield's style and voice. HE's got 'the stuff' and that meant merely as compliment for what he does. Got this set, and went back for more! This is effindefinitely Mandatory Metallica!
I was quite surprised how much I liked this cd. I bought it just for the song "Turn The Page", but in listening to it I discovered many other songs that make the purchase worth it. While I'm not a huge fan of bands that cover other artists music, (which is why this received a good instead of excellant rating) metallica doesn't depart very far from the original arraingment of the songs. Hetfield's voice fits most of the tracks like a glove, and when it doesn't, I like it anyway. From the slower tracks like Tuesdays Gone and Turn The Page to the raunchy and raucous So What, this is great compilation of cover songs done right by one of the best metal bands out there. So go ahead and buy it. You'll like it. And if not......SO WHAT!!!!
