I read all the reviews and bought this unit refurbished at a great price, replacing a TomTom 350xl. I have had 4 GPS units in the past 12yrs 3 were Garmin, 1 TomTom. All GPS units will get you where you want to go but if you like the little "extras" Garmin wins the toss.
Maps load fast and positioning is right on. If plugged into a battery hot point when you turn the unit off it goes into "sleep" mode so when you turn it back on its already booted. You can also turn the unit "off" en route on long trips and it will keep you route until you turn it back on.
You can search by name, street, intersection, address and YES by ZIP code. It also knows where time zones are and will change the time accordingly. When navigating unit will tell you what side of the street your destination is on (other brands do not)
Maps are more detailed, Includes a detailed Trip computer that shows speed, time travelled/stopped, estimated arrival and a altimeter - handy if you travel in hills and mountians.
Some reviews say that the voice command doesn't work, set it up properly and its AWESOME almost all functions can be controlled by voice including menus/screens, volume and phone. Bluetooth is great and I have had no problems with speaker volume. There is an ECO program that keeps track of your gas purchases and will tell you if your driving Economically
I bought this unit for all its extra features, the TomTom did not have any of the above.
This unit has been replaced by another so get it cheap while you can the new unit is almost the same but $200 more.
GARMIN 2460LMT (refurb)
I had an entry-level Garmin for about 4-5 years before I ordered this one. I liked that this one had the lifetime maps, the larger screen, and that the price of this model was only $25-30 more than just a map update for my little rope-start GPS unit (Garmin's map updates are way too expensive). It sat in the box for a few months waiting for me to re-input the addresses into the "favorites" but it's been in operation for just over a month now and I really, really like it. It's a bit more complex in the set-up and use, but it should get easier the more useage it gets; would have liked a full user's manual instead of just the "Quick Start get-you-going" pamphlet. And yes, I know you can read it on-line but sometimes, that's just not real handy. In addition to just getting you where you want to go, this baby will tell you your altitude (elevation), allow you to set a couple of different trips, give you average and max speeds, show you illustrations of what lanes to be in to avoid or to take exits on the freeway, and tell you about what time you will arive at your destination (you'll have to add some time if trafic lights are on your way - Garmin apparently doesn't allow for them...). One feature on this (and my prior Garmin) is that, when you leave your destination, just go to Favorites and touch "Home"; all you have to do then is to get out of the parking lot and it will get you back to the freeway and headed for home. Had a little fun with this unit. In "Language", there's American, British, Australian, and Indian versions of English - loved the Indian version (Sangeeta).
This Model 2460LMT Is Really nice. The best part about is the voice command. It feels like your driving in the future talking to the garmin & it giving you back info. I like having it blue toothed to my phone also. It displays my phone book, call history, missed calls.....etc. all from my phone on the garmin screen. The only thing I wish this had was 3 or 4G capability so it could access internet to help find info. Who knows there probably developing that now. Anyway,I definately like the garmin over other gps's due to it being more accurate & reliable. I started with a Model 200W 3 Years ago which, is working exellent still. The updating of these units is very easy online. Also they tell you not to leave them in the sun but, on the model 200W I have for 3 years & no problems. Plus I just updated that one to lifetime maps because, of it being so reliable. That pretty much made my decision for buying this new model 2460LMT. I figured if they last more than 3 years you might as well buy one that comes with lifetime maps.
Oh ya, I didn't mention about the traffic alert. It's pretty neat. I actually came to a situation where I was on a highway & it showed the traffic icon. it changed colors from green to orange & then it gave me a 30 mile warning & a possible reroute. I thought that was pretty cool. I acually waited till I was within 10 miles from the traffic jam to make a decision on rerouting & by that time the traffic lifted & it turned green.
So far I had this unit for 1 month & love it.
I finally bought the Garmin GPS because I allways seem to be getting lost especially in new neighborhoods that seem to be springing everywhere in L.A. The single feature I like is its ease of use: there are no tricks needed, it is right there, my 6 y.o grandchild can do it himself. There is nothing to dislike about the product, its size maybe? The voice directions are clear and conscise and compares very well with other GPS that I tried. I like that Garmin can forewarn me that I am driving over the speedlimit, approaching a camera-controlled intersection. In one word, it is an excellent GPS.
We love it. So easy to use and the screen is large enough to see easily. The product arrived as expected and in excellent shape
