I purchased this camera to replace my Finepix S5100. Mind you, there was nothing wrong with my 5 year old S5100. I just felt the need for something newer. The S5100 was a 4MP camera - the S1000FD is 10MP. I loved my S5100 and it did right by me for years, so I stuck with Fuji. It's still in the family...I gave it to my daughter and she's using it now. (Still ticking after 5 years!) I am not a professional photographer, I just like to take pictures and I don't know a lot about manual settings and such. All I know is, I keep the camera on AUTO and 99% of my pictures come out perfect. The camera does have face finder technology and for the most part, I don't have to fix red eye manually anymore. The large LCD screen is great. Battery usage is normal. (Invest in rechargeables! Save a fortune in batteries!) The zoom is decent, but the real test will be from my seats at Yankee Stadium! I'll update on this one later on. The S1000FD also accepts both SD and XD cards. I am able to use the 1Gb and 2Gb cards from my S5100. I purchased 4Gb SD cards for my Creative Zen and can use them with the S1000FD as well. I don't have issues with close-ups coming out blurry as some have complained about. The camera is a step up from the typical point and shoot cameras and a step (or two) below the expensive SLR's. It's much lighter than the S5100 and smaller. Check out the pics I posted which were taken with the camera. I don't think you'll be disappointed in this camera if you get it.
The Fuji FinePix S1000fd is a good sturdy camera, an ideal next step up for the advancing amateur, this camera would take you all the way up until entry level DSLR if that is what you are aiming to do with your photography skills.
If you are not looking to improve on your ability then this camera will see you through many years of general use; family pictures, birthdays, holidays etc.
It has 10 megapixels which produces excellent quality pictures, it’s very easy to use and is great to shoot in natural light. Physically it feels very good to hold and is the perfect shape and size for comfort.
The S1000fd has a 12X optical zoom that is equivalent to a 30-390mm focal range, which covers a large variety of photography aspects. The macro mode is an impressive feature with two modes (standard and super macro).
This camera also has some more striking and exciting features up its sleeve. The newly introduced ‘panoramic’ feature will take 3 shots and will merge them to create your panoramic photo. Ideal for capturing big groups of people or landscapes.
Then you have the usual features like face detection (fd), video capture, red-eye reduction, picture stabilisation anti-blur, pre-set scene modes and high speed shooting. I like the option to store pre-set scene modes onto the command dial for quicker access – a very nice touch.
Will take SD and XD memory card, and will also take the more common SDHC (high capacity) meaning you will probably never need to buy another card again.
The Good Points:-
Full Auto & Manual Control
2 Macro Modes
Very Long Zoom
The Bad Points:-
Unable to zoom when capturing video
Uses AA Batteries, you need to invest in some good quality rechargeable batteries.
To summarise; an affordable long zoom camera with face detection, panoramic function and an amazing macro function. I’m very impressed with this camera, its amazing what they can fit into such a small, stylish, light weighted camera.
Super Power Photography 2009
We began our search approx 6 months ago & knew we wanted one of the same 2 brands of cameras we currently own; Fuji or Olympus. We narrowed the "needs" down to the optical lens capacity & ease of use & began our search for the best price we could find. I came across this camera looking for cell phones- saw it & bid immediately! We couldn't be more pleased with it! Buttons are strategically placed, large screen to look at your image as well as the traditional lens, fits in the hand nicely, those w/with larger hands/fingers or arthritis/joint issues should find this a very friendly device as well. We enjoy the fact that it's not a "one button controls everything" device. It's divided up among several, which makes changing settings much less time consuming & frustrating. Picture quality is wonderful, choice of settings from you are totally in control of the quality, to the camera does all of the work was a great surprise for us as I like to "do it myself" & my husband does not- "let the camera do it"! AND, it is right on top & easy to read to set that too! We have not played w/the digital recording ability yet, I can't say we will that quickly as we have a camcorder & our phones do it too, but w/our old Fuji (one of their very 1st digital cameras!) it was easy to do w/great results!
I was really surprised at the compact size of this camera and really like its sleek design. While I'm still learning about all its functions,it's far surpassed my previous Kodak Easy Share camera. With its 14 megapixals and HD video feature, I get nice, clear photos and video, even in low light. I can zoom while shooting video, and I love the feature that allows the camera to take two pictures in quick succession, one with flash, the other without. This way I can easily chose the best picture without having to try to catch the shot again. In addition, not having to buy new batteries all the time is a big plus. Even rechargeable AA batteries just don't hold up well in previous cameras. So far I'm very pleased with this camera and look forward to mastering all the neat functions it provides.
this is without a doubt one of the best camera's ive ever had it has all of the features of the more expencive slr with all of the convenence of point and shoot. i just finish college and my last semester i took a digital photography class we used the more expencive slr cameras the canon and sony to be exact after 10 minutes with the fuji im taking better picture than i did with those cameras the separate options menus in the fugi alow you to set you own prefrences over several different setting and they are saved in the idividual menus all you have to do is turn your selector dial to the setting you want. the zoom and focal depth of the camera is great this is definately great its an slr thats trapped in a point and shoots body its like the ultimate hibred these things are so user freindly that its scareing anyone can take great pictures with ese cameras
