just glad i didnt watch this when it was canceled

Review For: Freaks and Geeks - The Complete Series (DVD, 2004, 6-Disc Set)

I'd heard about a quirky show that was unjustly canceled recently and took the winter break to sit and watch a few episodes. I finished the 18 episode complete series in 3 days. This is probably one of my favorite shows, and I'm sad I wasn't part of the campaign to bring it back. The storyline, revolving around teenagers Lindsay Weir and her crew of "freaks" and her younger brother Sam and his gang of "geeks" set in 1980 Michigan, flows throughout the series, but you don't need to have seen every episode to know whats going on and quickly become enthralled in the relationships and events that weave the show together.
And similar to other Apatow ventures, F&G isn't too "drama-ey" and instead leans on humor and is really more of a comedy than anything. I love the fact that for once a trip down memory lane to high school revolves around a group other than the jocks, cheerleaders and popular kids that riddle most within the genre.
Well written and some superb performances from many up and coming actors (James Franco pre-Spider-Man, Linda Cardellini on "ER" and although I don't think he's a particularly good actor, a young Seth Rogan) as well as cameos from now more famous actors, this is a very well rounded show that casts doubts upon the people who program television to let a gem like this be canceled after only 12 episodes and allow sub-standard sitcom rubbish to continue on air for years and years.
I support all musicians, movies and TV I enjoy with buying DVD's and I'll make sure it rarely stays home. That way the legacy of this show that was too soon for its time won't soon be forgotten.

Freaks & Geeks is surprisingly funny & addictive

Review For: Freaks and Geeks - The Complete Series (DVD, 2004, 6-Disc Set)

I never expected to be such a 'Freaks & Geeks' fan - after all, my favorite TV shows are closer to 'Family Guy', The Chappelle Show and Sportscenter... typically either sports or slapstick comedy. But I started watching 'Freaks & Geeks' after reading a newspaper review of it - raving about the show and explaining that it had developed a cult-following (albeit a small one). After just a couple episodes, I think I can rightfully claim membership into that cult.

The premise is a site of high-school aged teenagers growing up in the early 1980s in suburban Detroit. The show depicts different cultures of kids - mostly balancing the 'popular' vs. the 'unpopular'. You quickly become attached to the 'freaks' and 'geeks' - partly because the acting and writing is superb; partly because its easy to sympathize and empathize with the characters... after all, the stories are about maturing, fitting in, and finding yourself. What I enjoy most about the show is that its real - this isn't over the top like Melrose Place or the OC - though they might be fun to watch, this stays within itself.

Though the series aired in 2000 and was Emmy-nominated, it didn't draw enough of an audience to last a second season. It's made its way to DVD though and the series includes 6 discs - most with extras, deleted scenes, etc. Also of note, many of the actors and actresses are beginning to make it big - from starring roles in feature films (Scooby-Doo, the 40 Year Old Virgin) to upcoming sitcoms. In summary - highly recommended!

Freak or Geek...something for everyone

Review For: Freaks and Geeks - The Complete Series (DVD, 2004, 6-Disc Set)

Like many I was puzzled and frustrated when Freaks & Geeks disappeared from our TV screens...the show was pure genius, eloquently exploring the universal truths of adolescence, why kill it? Thank goodness someone in corporate America saw the market for a DVD boxed set of the complete series. I grew up in a different time (the early seventies) and place(the north of England) yet I could both recognize and identify with these characters in a 1980s high school in Michigan. Hey Nick, just like Lindsey I couldn't have dated you back then, but I bet you've made the best husband and father( ...though Sam could probably have given you a run for your money). See how invested I am in these guys...only 18 episodes and yet I am speculating (and hoping) for their future lives.

Thank you Ebay for allowing me to buy the complete series at a bargain price so that I could introduce my children to this band of supposed misfits...my kids are high schoolers in the 21st century, yet after seeing the DVD totally recognized that sometimes it is a very thin line that separates the Freak from the Geek. Hey but at least no one in my family runs with the popular kids!

Freaks & Geeks

This is the greatest show ever to only last one season. F&G proves that no matter what time period you grew up in, teenagers always seem to have the same problems. Good-girl Lindsay is a sophmore in high school during 1980-1981. She is discovering herself for the first time with the help of her new (socially outcasts) friends known as the freaks. Her little brother, Sam, is a freahman geek who is trying to inpress a popular cheerleader while still maintaining his child like ways with his other geek friends. The show is an instant classic and the yearbook dvd edition is the best dvd set to have ever been produced. The show is extremely funny and will also remind you of all the good things from your own adolescence. IT IS A MUST HAVE!

Love the complete series!!

Review For: Freaks and Geeks - The Complete Series (DVD, 2004, 6-Disc Set)

I have never watched Freaks and Geeks in my life. I heard it was on TV a while back but never bothered to watch it. One day, my boyfriend suggested to buy the whole series. So I did for those get together nights ;)...And the series is pretty good, funny, and rather addicting to keep watching the episodes. It's basically about regular high school life and the issues you go through. The story is pretty much in order so I suggest you watch it in order to understand what's going on. I disliked when they put the theme song on because the volume gets super loud so you have to keep changing the volume up and down during the watch. Other than that, a great complete series. I'm disappointed that they canceled :(...It was such a great show!
