"Frasier" was a staple in our home for 11 years; longer if you count "Cheers". Who wouldn't want to come home every evening to that beautiful condo and pour a glass of sherry? But even I have to admit that the last few seasons were sagging a bit due to behind the scenes changes, scriptwriters and production people coming and going. The quality just wasn't there anymore.
However, for the last season, they pulled out all the stops and made some of the best episodes ever! Nearly every one is a gem. My favorite among them being, "The Doctor is Out", guest starring Patrick Stewart as a fabulously gay Seattle Opera director, who tries to woo Frasier after he is mistakenly "outed" on his radio show. Frasier is so flattered and awestruck by his new elevation into high society and the arts, that he can't quite bring himself to confess his real orientation to Stewart.
The last few episodes show that the characters aren't just stuck in sitcomland forever. They each are moving on with their lives, like the rest of us. Niles and Daphne with their new child; Dad with his new beau; and Frasier, who after all these years, believes he may finally have found "Ms. Right".
Watching the DVD set is a bittersweet experience, because I (and perhaps you) are reminded of what a great show it could be, and how much I miss all these characters now. I have to admit some bias, as I grew up in Seattle and still live nearby, but the Cranes always seemed more like friends of mine rather than tv characters. Friends that I could stop in, and see how they were doing from time to time. And pour myself a nice glass of sherry.
I still remember the earlier seasons fondly, but for me, the final season is the one to own.
This DVD set is the last season of one of the last great TV shows, Frasier. I highly recommend it to those people who are looking for a bit of witty comedy, instead of the foul mouth slap comedy found on most TV shows.
I love Frasier because he's so witty and funny in a really charming, sophisticated way. He and his brother Niles are always getting into trouble in strange, unexpected ways. And his dad, Marty, is a hoot too. It's just a great show all around.
Most sitcoms don't age very well. Frasier is a rare exception. It offers great writing, perfect casting, likable characters and good mix of physical and intellectual comedy. It ran for 11 seasons, starting out strong, sagging a bit in the middle and finishing strong. There will never again be another show like it!
A character, I'm sure, Kelsey Grammar, found it difficult to say goodbye to. He has not evolved beyond this successful portrayal of Frasier Crane in any subsequent TV series.
