There is nothing more terrifying to me than being abducted against my will, especially by aliens. Although, I've contemplated how I might be so lucky to get taken up to another world and be introduced to a super-human race of creatures that could take me away from here, since it is that I sometimes feel that there is really no more intelligent life left on this planet that understands me. I've been interested in UFOs and Alien Abduction for decades that started with several books including "The Andressian Affair" documenting a true to life abduction by a young lady in the 70s. "The 4th Kind" is a reference to scientist J. Allen Hynek's famous categories involving the sightings of UFOs. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) also referred to this scale.
This film works really well in spots, although, it is extremely hard to follow since there are overlapping split screens showing the supposed reality shots along with the mimicking dramatizations.
This fictitious story which is passed off as true (just for effect) works because it does such a good job of convincing you that it is real. If you come into this film with total ignorance yet belief, the film will work for you too. The film makes it so real that you are forced to believe because, what we are watching is told to us from the very beginning as a real re-inactment.
The backdrop for the film is Nome, Alaska which makes it even spookier. Although Nome is populated by 51% of native Alaskans, the film ignores this fact since we only see Hollywood actors. I'd have to say that this was detrimental to the story-line.
I'll have to hand it to the producers of this film. The films budget was extremely tight, however, everything in the film actually looked great. Their expenditures on production were quite low considering a budget of 10 million. I would dare say that I think that Milla Jovovich probably got at least 2 million to star in the film. Our director and screenwriter Olatunde Osunsanmi actually played himself as the interviewer of supposedly real Abbey Tyler. Not many directors actually have the ability to play a role like this. As we see things, this guy is just there to interview this distressed person and find out the truth. Since Abbey Tyler is supposed to be real, we are never really sure who the lady playing her really was, but we do grasp and understand that Milla Jovovich is actually playing her in dramatization.
If you have ever seen anything Will Patton (Sheriff August) has been in, then you will know why this was the perfect role for him. In this film, Sheriff August is continually trying to get this Abbey Tyler into a position to debunk her outlandish claims that she continually makes about the stories that are being told about peculiar occurrences that seem to be cropping up with her patients under hypnosis. August attempts to arrest her on several occasions only to give her another break. This lady can not seem to stay out of the limelight. As you will see, Abbey continues to press & uncover more & more information that supports her outlandish claims of alien abductions.
The film's hoaxed interviews have angered the families of real missing persons in & around Nome for trivializing their loss. Melanie Edwards, V.P. of Kawerak, Inc (an organization representing tribal peoples in Alaska) described the film as insensitive to family members of people who have gone missing over the years.
Despite its plot involving alien abductions, aliens are never shown.
Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) stars as Dr. Abigail Emily Tyler. The movie is a mock docu-drama about how Dr. Tyler was abducted in 2000 and the acting is interlaced with actual footage of Dr. Tylers interviews with the Psychologist who helped her after her ordeal.
The opening of the movie is a bit odd with a split screen. This continues throughout the movie and I guess you get used to it. I honestly think the movie would have been better without it.
It is a good show, somewhat strange at times, but mostly it is just entertaining.
The only thing I did not like about the movie was the constant voice over of "real" footage over the actors. It became annoying, especially during peak moments when you were trying to listen to what was going on.
Additional Cast Includes: Corey Johnson, Enzo Clienti, Will Patton, Elias Koteas
If you are into this type of movie I would go ahead and buy this one.
I believe the facts about alien abductions are frieghtning cause there unknown to us and the memory loss and what they do to make abducties forget what experiences they had with them are terrible, two things about the movie i did not understand is if the authorities and her friend DR Campos new her husband committed suicide then why wasnt it mentioned at the start of the movie and about the aliens voice saying that it was GOD,i dont believe that (GOD)is about love,he created us and he knows all about us cause we are his creation (however!)there are so many races of intellegent aliens out there such as the paladiens who resemble us here on earth, then the greys who are short, big heads, big dark eyes with small ears, nose and mouth, long arms and slender, then there are the reptilians who are frieghtning looking and resemble reptiles, just like us they have good and not so good aliens,in my study about extrateresterals and beings from other galaxies theres about 24 or 68 defrient types of alians out there, some of them have made contact with people and let them know that they come of peace and they are concerned about the people of this earth destroying this planet of ours called earth and they want to help us.look up (billy mier)and view the video of him its very intresting cause he communicates with alians(paladians)and he shows you pictues of ufos what the (paladians)alians look like?,well the movie is right on because it is happening all over this world and our Government knows about it.
This has got to be one of the scariest movies I have ever watched! The other scarry movie was Araqnaphobia (the one about the spiders, 1980's ?) I may not have that spelled right). What made this film so scary was that it was based on a true story and I loved the way the film was presented. It was presented in a format I seldem see and that is half of the television frame has the original person who these tremdous things happened to while the other half of the television frame had professional actors acting out the scenes as told by the original person. After watching the film I got on the interet and looked up Nome Alaska to find out if there was any validity to the supporting story that this film depicts. Scary stuff!! If you have ever seen a UFO . . . .
