I very much like all the U-line Flip products. U represents Ultra -- the quality is even better, offering more internal memory. I've been using Flip cameras for nearly two years. This recently purchased used U1120 has been serving me well. Sound quality is exceptional. With only a 2x zoom there's nothing really that can get messed up in the image. It's High Def. There's a stabilizer built into the device. These Flips are for family gatherings and fairly close shots. They're not designed to catch a small image from any real distance; they're for livingroom shots and backyard type spans, as well as for capturing large areas like beaches, hills or mountains, large buildings. I like the U1120 because you can swap out 2 AA batteries easily. The Flip brand 2-AA-battery packs are wallet drainers. Just go buy rechargeable AAs (and an AC-connecting charger) and you'll be a lot happier. The best thing about Flips is that they're so darned easy to use. There's nothing to figure out. You turn it on, and hit the red button to start, hit the red button to end, and upload it to your computer later. The Flip program is so darned easy to use too. I have the best time reviewing a video clip, saving a bunch of memorable still shots from it, saving them all as jpegs, then paring the video down at the front and back if I need to. Then I export it to a computer file, and from there I can load it into Windows Live Movie Maker, where I can add title, captions, and all kinds of other cool extras. But if you don't feel like getting all artistic with your flip shots, just uploading them and saving them is so very easy to do. You can set your camera's program so that as soon as the videos are loaded into the computer, they're deleted from the camera too, saving you time deleting them yourself. I really love the simplicity of Flips and their program. Even though the company has stopped producing these, the cameras are still extremely popular on ebay. I own several (a U2120, a U32120, a U1120, and a U260) and have also started a ministry to new moms called MamaMovies. We expect to be giving out a lot of Flips to moms so they can record their new babies and young children. A hint to anyone who has lost a few (or even a lot of) minutes of recordable time on your Flip. A wonderful lady on e-bay showed me how to reformat the camera so you can recover your full recording time, whether it be 60 minutes or 120 minutes. You plug your Flip into the USB, turn it on, go to "Computer" or "My computer," right click on the icon for your Flip, then find "format" and click on it. Find FAT in your choices (on my U2120 I had to choose FAT32, the default setting) then click on format. It warns you that all data will be erased. You click on it anyway and all your memory is restored to your camera. I was able to "repair" four different Flip cameras and restore their full recording time again. One other piece of advice. The Flip Slide is a product I would avoid. I was very displeased with the inadequacy of its microphone. The other Flips have extremely good sound quality. I don't know what they did different with the Slide, but I've read other reviews with the same complaint. Sound is just as important as image, so stick with the other Flips, especially those in the Ultra (U) line.
Old school HD camcorder (not that there's anything wrong with that). DOES NOT accept HDMI mini or micro cable. Solid little camera for capturing HD video and transferring it to PC/internet.
Runs on AA batteries or rechargeable battery pack. When the rechargeable battery pack is used a circuit is activated to allow recharging of the battery pack.
If you use the rechargeable battery pack know that it is very likely a simple timed 'battery fryer'. In other words - if your battery is not drained DO NOT charge it! You will overcharge it and fry it.
If/when you fry the battery pack - go with some rechargeable AA batteries and get a quality battery charger.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR ALL YOUR AA/AAA RECAHRGEABLE NEEDS!!!
The best rechargeable AA/AAA batteries are the Sanyo Eneloop. The current generation of Eneloops will hold a charge up to 3 years and can be recharged 15000 times. Energizer's are CHINESE MADE CRAP!
AT WORST - buy a AA Eneloop/charger unit (Costco/Sams - other big box may have them). Better yet, buy Eneloop batteries and a Maha charger (something like the 401 for $40, or the C9000 or 800/808 models if you are getting a little more serious about rechargeables - a good hobby charger is the next step up but it's a big price jump).
Another option for batteries are Maha rechargeable batteries. The Maha Powerex are not 'low self discharge' like the Sanyo Eneloop - but they do hold a bit more charge and will hold that charge a couple months. Like the Eneloop, they are made in Japan. Almost every other rechargeable is made in China/Taiwan crap. Maha also makes a low discharge battery similar to the Eneloop called Imedion - but I would just go with Eneloop for most consumers.
I actually am a huge fan of AA/AAA devices and 'specific purpose' devices and these Flip cameras fill a nice little niche. When the SHTF your smart phone will probably be dead within 24 hours and if you aren't prepared with a good battery drawer - you are kinda screwed.
I purchased this item refurbished, which was a first for me. So far, I have not had any issues whatsoever. I purchased the optional rechargable battery pack but to be fair, regular Duracell batteries lasted quite a while in this device. It did not drain them like a digital camera will. With a quick flip, you can hook this device to your pc and view/send videos quickly. This is so easy to use and has better voice quality than the average digital camera in video mode. The buttons are simple and picture quality is really very good. I also purchased a silicone skin and clear screen protector for it. The screen protector was large enough to also cut a piece to cover the lens in front so I have no worries when it comes to scratching it. The nice thing about this is that you can do a five second video or a half hour video ~ it is all up to you. I am very pleased with this item; it is excellent for a first time user! The only thing I have not done at this time is use the included cables to connect it directly to my tv, but that is a great option if you want to play back to a room full of people (think wedding, graduation, birthday, vacation videos...) without them all hovering over your pc. In the future I may upgrade to more than a 4G, but this is really the perfect starter kit!
This is thee best video camcorder I've ever owned. The best part is that it runs on AA batteries, and not those expensive batteries that all other video cameras use. It takes crisp, clear videos and with the flip of a USB connector it couldn't be easier to download your videos to your computer. You can also watch your videos right away on your TV. This video camera only takes 2 hours of video at a time, but that is just enough time for your children's school performances, or family birthdays. Too bad these aren't being made any more, but other companies are coming out with the same video technology, and very similar to the Flip Camcorder.
This camcorder has a fantastic digital stereo microphone, it picks up live music fabulously. The only negative about the Flip Cam is that it tends to break easily. I am on my 3rd one, both previous camera's simply stopped working suddenly....and poof...they were finished!
I upload live songs to Youtube and this camera is the best one I've found (for the money) when its working. Other more expensive camera's don't have the digital stereo recording capability of the Flip Cam. But they probably last longer before having to throw them away.
