Movie synopsis
Actor-director Robert Townsend came to fame depicting the pitfalls of the Hollywood experience for black actors with his 1987 film HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE. Four years later, he took on the mid-'60s music scene with THE FIVE HEARTBEATS. After doing extensive research with long-lived pop/R&B group the Dells, he painted a cinematic scene of five young friends in the 60s who share the dream of making music. They journey together through three decades, experiencing all the ups and downs show business had to offer, intensified by the difficulties faces by black acts in the era of civil-rights protest. Interacting as everything from a close-knit musical family to occasional bitter rivals, the fictional Five Heartbeats experience both success and tragedy in this excellent film. The multi-talented Townshend functions as both director and star, alongside compelling performances by a cast that includes Leon and Diahann Caroll. Featuring a mix of original songs and classic Motown material, THE FIVE HEARTBEATS is an irresistible combination of music and drama that captures a unique period in American cultural history.

"...Musically, THE FIVE HEARTBEATS is on target all the way. It's hard to remember a recent film that had so many warm-hearted, rousing, big-souled song numbers..."
Los Angeles Times - Michael Wilmington (03/29/1991)

"...Fundamental sweetness and sincerity....In cameo, Harold Nicholas's very presence expands the range of this film..."
New York Times - Janet Maslin (03/29/1991)

life circumstances

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

This movie has absolutely everything.

It's got comedy of all sorts, yet this movie really isn't a comedy.

And it's got compelling moments that'll make you think and make you feel some kinda way about given relatable characters and life circumstances, yet I wouldn't exactly fit this movie into a mold of your typical drama.

"The Five Heartbeats" is the loosely autobiographical tale of the rise, fall and ultimately triumph in life of a hit five-man R&B group from the 1960s (my father and uncles have an ongoing debate about whether this group's experiences were based upon The Temptations, The Four Tops or The Dells).

This movie seems like a real-enough, real life story about how money, fame and stardom can breed distrust, hate, disloyalty and an assortment of shady dealings that could undue any family relationship or close friendship.

The story follows five young men who start out as close friends who share a common passion and talent: singing.

Of course, they get "discovered" but as they start to and eventually make it big, they discover their moment at the top is filled with tragedy, anger, addictions and deceptions of all kinds -- realities totally different from the starry-eyed images they'd had of "making it big" once upon a time.

Overall, this movie is very much uplifting because, while it takes a life time, these five friends eventually overcome the past and learn some invaluable life lessons.

This is a movie for families -- the plot and various scenes will be interpreted differently by kids and adults, however, both demographics will be able to relate to this movie's overall theme and message.

Fame and fortune are fleeting. Friendships -- good friendships -- are priceless.

This is a movie that was out and out ignored by Hollwyood.

Easily Robert Townsend's best film and deserving of Academy Award consideration.

Awesome acting, brilliant writing and a blazingly inspiring soundtrack.

This movie is the complete package.

Perhaps the most recommended movie pitch I'll ever make on Ebay for one film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guaranteed crowd-pleasing movie and one you can watch over and over and over, and not get tired of.

Robert Townsend, did a great job of starring in and directing this movie. This movie tells the story of a black singing group in the 1960's rise and fall from fame.

The Five Heartbeats

Yes, I would recommend this product to a friend.

The rise and fall of a black male singing group in the 1960s. This movie truly is one of Hollywoods hidden treasures. Although minor acclaim and publicity was recieved about this movie when it came out. "Five Heartbeats" takes you into the life of Duckie Matthews(Townsend) who sets out to make a dream of being a music star come true. Accompanied by his brother (Leon) and three other neighborhood friends, a night by chance makes that dream an overnight reality. The acting in this movie is what makes it remarkable. Given that these five lead characters were practically unknowns at the time(excluding Townsend) Leon, gave a poweful performance as Townsend's older, yet greatly immature and sex driven brother. Tico Wells provides comedy relief at times in portraying a shy preacher's son entering into a world that he does not belong. But the best performance has to go to Michael Wright who brought you into the painful life of the troubled lead singer Eddie Kane Jr. It is a movie that you can watch over and over again with your family and friends.
