Movie synopsis
Walt Disney took a big chance with this ambitious anthology of animated fantasies. First, he set them to lengthy classical music pieces, and then he boldly experimented with different forms of animation, sometimes jettisoning any sort of narrative altogether. The result is a sometimes mesmerizing, sometimes hilarious, sometimes frightening, but always beautiful moviegoing experience. A box-office failure when first released, it's now considered a timeless treasure. Highlights include: Mickey Mouse in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," the leaping hippos and alligators in "Dance of the Hours," the rise and fall of the dinosaurs set to Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring," the dancing mushrooms of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," and Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain," with its fearsome winged demon raging at the heavens. One of Walt Disney's ambitions for the project was to rerelease the film periodically over the years with new sequences. Though the film was regularly rereleased, it wasn't until 1999 that his intention was finally realized with the premiere of FANTASIA 2000, a lavish follow-up that included a digitally restored "Sorcerer's Apprentice" and a host of new material. The original FANTASIA, however, remains a one-of-a-kind auditory and visual experience that is still, in many ways, far ahead of its time.

Walt Disney's greatest masterpiece!

Review For: Fantasia (VHS, 1991)

In 1940, 3 years after the initial success of Walt Disney's first full-length animated film "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs", he decided to try another attempt at an animated feature. This time, the idea would be to have a series of animated sequences set to various classical music pieces, programmed together as a sort of concert feature. The result is the masterpiece, "Fantasia". At a running time of 2 hours, this is brilliant filmmaking on the grandest scale. There are a total of 7 sequences prepared within the framework of this film. The musical sequences are Johann Sebastian Bach's "Toccata And Fugue In D Minor" which features many abstract images that appear on the screen; Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" which features a variety of dances by animated fairies, fishes, flowers, mushrooms and leaves; Paul Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" featuring Mickey Mouse in the title role; Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite Of Spring" depicting the beginning of the world through the age of the dinosaur; Beethoven's "The Pastoral Symphony" depicts a mythical ancient Grecian world of centaurs, a Pegasus family, fauns, cherubs and other creatures; Ponchielli's "Dance Of The Hours" features ostriches, hippos, elephants and alligators all attempting the ballet; Mussorgsky's "Night On Bald Mountain" shows a moment of evil celebration which is overthrown by Schubert's "Ave Maria" showing a congregation of faithful followers walking toward a forest cathedral in candlelight procession. This is perhaps Disney's greatest film creation. "Fantasia" remains a classic for all generations.

Review For: Fantasia (VHS, 1991)

Disney's Fantasia is a true marvel - beautiful and exciting to watch and brings back so many memories from childhood, Disneyland / Disneyworld, and the great Disney characters of old. Of course eBay has become the home for classic Disneyana and Disney DVDs - and Fantasia is an essentially addition to any DVD collection - children or not! Below are some great stats on Fantasia - if you're not already looking to buy, I'm sure you'll get a copy after reading this!

* FANTASIA is number 58 on the American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Greatest Movies.

* FANTASIA was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1990.

* The film won two special Academy Awards in 1941 for the "Advancement of the Use of Sound," and for the "Creation of a New Form of Visualized Music."

Disney Classic on VHS

Review For: Fantasia (VHS, 1991)

Fortunately I have a vcr to view this vhs tape. Disney's Fantasia is an award winning classic, with the music performed by the Philadelphia orchestra, my home town. This tape was copyrighted so you can not copy it. Disney had the technology to prevent pirating back in the 40s, I'm impressed.

Someone asked me if I remembered the ending of Fantasia, which I did not, so I decided to buy it. Fantasia is very hard to find, or it may not be the original, so I definitely got a gem. I could have bought it on dvd, but the price was right and I have a vcr. The tape plays well and the quality is very good.

Disneys Fantasia VHS

Review For: Fantasia (VHS, 1991)

I have been buying the classic Disney movies for my two children to collect. This is a great way to collet movies for little one's, considering the wear and tear that they go through. I do not feel like I am waisting money when I purchase from E bay. I get a great deal and save some money as well. The children love thier new movies. They get so exited when they see a "movie" shaped package in the mailbox! So far, I have gotten great used movies for considerably less money, rather than buying them new in a store. It is working out great so far. I would recommend buying from E bay to anyone. Especially things for children. They lose interest or change interests so often. In the long run you would be saving a bundle! Go Ebay!!!!!!!
