FANTASIA ANTHOLOGY

Review For: Fantasia Anthology (DVD, 2000, 3-Disc Set)

Disney wanted to take classical concert music and set it to visuals that he thought a person might conjure up while they sat and listened. When he finished his film, he had created one of the most creative and innovative pieces of animation that contained animation years ahead of its time. Originally, the idea was to release Fantasia every few years with some new animation pieces and some old ones as well. The film did not do as well commercially and the idea was scrapped because of it. That is until Roy Disney, Walt's nephew, decided to revive the concept of Fantasia with a new version Fantasia 2000. Fantasia 2000 featured six new animated pieces and one old favorite. The Fantasia Anthology is a three-disc set that includes the original and the new film, as well as the Fantasia legacy disc that is jam packed with extras.

DISC 1 - FANTASIA - This is the original Disney Fantasia film. The print has undergone a digital restoration and it shows it. The print looks brand new and the color restoration is fantastic. The film is presented in letter boxed format and it shows off the animation brilliantly. The sound has been painstakingly re-mastered, it is available in both the Dolby, and DTS formats. The music totally envelops the room in either format and alone makes this a great disc. There is also a making of feature, which examines Fantasia from its origins to its theatrical release. It also covers the innovations in animation and sound processing that it inspired. This is a great feature. The disc also features two commentaries. The first is with Roy Disney, James Levine who conducted Fantasia 2000, John Canemaker who is a historian of animation and Scott MacQueen who is the manager of film restoration for Disney. There is a ton of good stuff in this commentary and the four voices keep it fresh throughout. The next commentary is different interviews that Walt Disney gave through out his lifetime about the Fantasia film.

DISC 2 FANTASIA 2000- the first time that this film was released it was only shown in Imax theaters. The animated segments are shorter than the original film but they are a bit more fluid and they move at a brisk pace. The first thing I wondered was if a home version would hold up to the impressive size and scope of the Imax format. Despite the limitations of my television set the visuals of this film remain quite powerful due in a large part to the flawless visuals that were possible by the digital to digital transfer. The video is flawless. An amazing audio transfer matches the video quality. The music is available in Dolby 5.1 and in the DTS formats. The disc has two commentaries, one with Roy Disney, conductor James Levine and producer Don Ernst. The other features insights by the segment and art directors of each feature. Both are solid commentaries and fans will not want to miss them. There are also two short cartoons produced by Disney in the 1950's that were supposed to be educational films for music.

DISC 3 THE FANTASIA LEGACY - This is a great supplemental disc that allows you to learn things about any segment in both films. You can see how they were pieced together, concept art, visual and musical development as well as alternate ideas that were not used for the segments of both Fantasia films as well as other assorted features. Other features include a short film showing how certain special effects were done in the original film. Another great feature is "The Fantasia that never was".

Fantasia Anthology

Review For: Fantasia Anthology (DVD, 2000, 3-Disc Set)

First of all, if you like classical music and beautiful animation, this dvd set has it all! If you don't like classical music or disney animation then this probably isn't for you. The musical scores match the animation very well and the bonus features are very intensive and go deep into the production as well as footage of Walt Disney himself. It also explains where they got the inspiration for many of the pieces, and how they made their amazing special effects without computers over 70 years ago on the original Fantasia. However in the original Fantasia(not the 2000 version)there are several cases where mild nudity is shown. It didn't really bother me, as it is cartoony and there are no details, however a nine year old who happened to be in the room picked up on it immediately. If you want to show this to your children I would suggest reviewing it first, even if it is rated G, then make an educated decision based on your own opinion and parenting style. These parts can be easily skipped though, and shouldn't pose much of a problem. Without a doubt this is the definitive dvd set for Fantasia and I highly recommend it.

Fantasia Anthology (Original and 2000, 3 DVD set )

Review For: Fantasia Anthology (DVD, 2000, 3-Disc Set)

This DVD set of "Disney's Fantasia" and "Disney's Fantasia 2000" was mindfully designed as a comparative study of the two Disney work. With the included supplemental DVD (Disk 3), the viewer can gat a clear understanding in the advancements made in animation and sound. From hand drawn, inked, and painted still cells and glass plates, to CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). And, the advancement from "Polyphonic sound" to Multi Channel Digital sound. Also included in the supplemental DVD are scenes not seen in the theatrical releases of the two Fantasias.

The second edition, "Fantasia 2000", seems to draw more emotional response from the viewer than the first release, where as the first release seems to inspire more of a dream state, as was the intention of the first release.

It is well worth getting and viewing the anthology... It truly is a very entertaining experience.

Disney at his best!

Review For: Fantasia Anthology (DVD, 2000, 3-Disc Set)

I have been looking for the original Fantasia for months now, but it is very hard to find, as the title is currently out of print. While I was browsing around the Disney site, I came across this lovely Anthology, which also contains the Fantasia 2000, as well as a special features disk. Of course, the Anthology is not currently on the market either, due to a general lack of interest.
From the time of Fantasia's original opening, the public response has been markedly luke-warm. I find this quite sad, as it is a visionary masterpiece, a bit too visionary, I suppose. The way that Fantasia is able to introduce the very young to classical music, as well as mythology, and the tradition of dance, is astounding. If all children were exposed to these themes, rather than violent robots and mindless blathering creatures that have hijacked the fine art of animation, the future of the world would be much brighter.
So cheers to old Walt, his courage, his imagination, and his legacy!

***FABULOUS***Family Enjoyment & learning!

Review For: Fantasia Anthology (DVD, 2000, 3-Disc Set)

Fantasia had featured classical music interpreted in animation by the imagination and creativity of the Disney artists. The film pioneered the use of stereophonic sound nearly 20 years before the first stereophonic phonograph records were released to home consumers. It featured bravura performances by Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra and some of the most brilliant animation the world has ever known. Fantasia was a totally unique film experience. This is my child's favorite Disney DVD //*-*\\
