This consolidation of Marcel Pagnol's trilogy stars Leslie Caron in the role she was born to play! Lovingly filmed with panoramic genius and a score so sweeping and mesmerising you get caught up in it. Based on the Broadway musical from the 1950's, the filmmakers made the conscious decision to leave the lyrics in New York and use only the rich score. You find yourself entranced with the human tale of childhood sweethearts/soul mates who's budding relationship ends in tragedy when he runs off to sea the day after they spend the night together. The scene where he begs her to tell him to stay, is one of the most romantic on film. You have to remind yourself to breathe. Loving him, and desiring his happiness above her own, she sends him away, not realizing she is already carrying his child. This theme of self- sacrifice for an other's happiness is woven through out most poignantly. The story is multi-leveled about the relationships between the lovers and their friends and family, the most charming of which is the intense love/hate relationship between Maurice's Father[Charles Boyer]and the man who secretly loves Caron from afar [Maurice Chevalier] Both conspire to save her reputation by marrying her to the lovesick Chevalier who only wants to take care of her and raise the child as his heir. For awhile everyone is happy doting on the child, until the unknowing Maurice returns to find his dreams usurped by an old wealthy man. Without giving away the end, let's just say the inter-relationships, self vs family responsibility, and the stuggle to do right by each other, binds these people and elevates their sacrifices to heroic proportions.
Intense, amazingly funny, rich in the love of family, this tale of pulling together was filmed and acted with such power you want it to go on and on. A movie for generations who will each relate to the subplots of youth and age and the joy to be found when people truly love and care for each other more than for themselves. I highly recommend!
This has been one of my favorite love stories for over 35 years. I've recorded this onto VHS about 35 yraes ago then bought it on VHS about 10 years ago and now wanted it on DVD.
