Movie synopsis
Stanley Kubrick's final film is a mature, highly intelligent, thrilling masterpiece of sexual obsession and marital (in)fidelity. Tom Cruise stars as Bill Harford, a doctor who becomes obsessed with a sexual fantasy that his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), confesses to him. Although the fantasy (involving a naval officer) occurred only in Alice's mind, Bill can't get it out of his own head; his obsession leads him through a series of potential sexual encounters, each one surrounded by the specter of death. His whole world threatens to unravel as he falls deeper and deeper into a web of mystery, lies, and deceit.Kubrick's film breathes with vivid blues, reds, and blacks, the threat of illicit sex and death lurking around every corner. Cruise and Kidman, who are married in real life, are utterly convincing as a happy couple suddenly forced to reexamine their faith in each other. Sidney Pollack, Todd Field, Julienne Davis, Marie Richardson, and Vinessa Shaw sparkle in minor roles. Based on the novella TRAUMNOVELLE by Arthur Schnitzler, EYES WIDE SHUT is a brilliant examination of the psychological nature of sex and marriage, of faith and faithlessness, of obsession and desire. Kubrick said that his last film (he died shortly before the film opened) was "my best film ever;" while that is debatable, there is no doubting that the film is a splendid finale to a glorious career.

A lasting tribute to the beauty of Nicole Kidman

This film is remembered for many things, but the real reason I got it was for Nicole Kidman.I have the video and it's nice also to have the DVD,but I'm aware that there's a European uncensored version and it's a shame that the DVD didn't have this added footage. In fact,it could have been made like another DVD of the film "Dressed to Kill",which has both the rated and unrated versions on the same disc and even shows the viewer the comparisons. For some, this film will chiefly be remembered for it's plentiful shots of women appearing fully nude and while Miss Kidman does have some nude scenes(notably at the beginning of the movie)my favorite scene is when she's arguing in the bedroom with her soon-to-be,real-life,ex-husband,Tom Cruise. Both actors turn in a fine performance and I really think Nicole's at her sexiest here.In addition to this wonderful scene, the film also stands out as being the last ever film directed by the late Stanley Kubrick. While the film was panned by some reviewers,I would say, overall, that for his last film this was a fine achievement for Kubrick. As far as the story goes, there are some really oddball moments as well as times of real tension.I don't want to give too much of the plot away so I guess you'll just have to see it for yourself.

Don't Close Your Voyeuristic Eyes or Doubt a Good Plot

Some critics might be tempted to trivialize Kubrick's avante garde finale film about sexual obsessions. But it did haul in $65 million! Kidman and Cruise, plus Sydney Pollack did star.

Dr. Bill Hartford (Cruise) is the sexually obsessed one. His wife, Alice (Kidman), shared a sexual fantasy with him that he couldn't erase from his mind.

Dr. Hartford's life starts to fall apart as he seeks out a wild array of sexual death scenes. One of them is downright closed cultish and quite lavish in the exotic, erotic, and fantastical of the aristocracy.

This film certainly questions all three of the psychological, sociological, and cultural characteristics of marriages, desires, and faith-based practices.

Kidman and Cruise show about as much of their sexual selves as I have ever seen. It's especially intriguing that they do in this fetishistic and fantastical form. I think it's a stunner.

Eyes Wide Shut (2000, DVD) Kidman/Cruise Used

I am Australian and so I like to follow the careers of Australians, in this case, Nicole Kidman. I found many, many reviews of this movie on Google. It was the last picture before his death of the renowned director, Stanley Kubrik. It was the last movie, as far as I know, starring Kidman and Cruise, before they went their separate ways. The movie is eerie and disturbing,if for no other reason than that it appears to expose Cruise and Kidman even though they are acting the part of other characters. Kubrik found a way to make the Barbie doll nude unappetizing - have fifty of them stand in a circle in a ritualistic ceremony during which the participants wear masks. The sexuality here seems gratuitous. In contrast, Kidman's figure appears childlike in its girlish slenderness. Cruise is mocked in the street by some frat boy types who raise questions about his manhood and orientation. The last frame in which the marriage appears to have a future was unconvincing, and augurs the future breakup of the couple offscreen. This film bears watching once because of the prominence of the principals in the field of film. Many observe that the movie is not erotic. I quickly returned the DVD to ebay for resale, where I got my money back!

"Eyes Wide Shut" - An Eye Opener!

Although I am not a fan of Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman, I find Stanley Kubrick’s last film, “Eyes Wide Shut” fascinating. The basic plotline of the film is one man’s erotic odyssey and the ramifications of his journey. Cruise does an adequate job as the main character, getting caught up in his surreal quest; and Kidman gives her standard “wooden” performance, although her character does call for a modicum of remoteness. The score is haunting, and visually the film is striking - Kubrick filmed using existing source lighting (table lamps, overhead lights, etc.) whenever possible, which adds to the film's flavor. The hedonistic masked ball is a combination of a man’s nightmare and wet dream rolled into one. Stanley Kubrick considered this to be his greatest film, and ironically died just four days after presenting Warner Bros. with what was reported to be a final cut of the film.

I originally viewed the US version of the film on cable TV, and was curious about the unrated version, which was why I purchased the set. The two disc set includes the rated and unrated versions (the US theatrical cut contained computer-generated people in the foreground obscuring some of the more explicit sexual action during the orgy sequence). The unrated version is the first time Stanley Kubrick's final cut has been made directly available in any form to customers in the USA. I highly recommend “Eyes Wide Shut” if you are a Kubrick aficionado or just enjoy 159 minutes of quality entertainment.

NICOLE & TOM LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SEEN THEM BEFORE, EVER..

Director Stanley Kubrick's last film is a masterpiece. A lifetime achievement. On the surface, the doctor (Cruise), and his wife (Kidman) (yes, they were still married then) appear to have a seemingly normal, well-to-do life. Reality is that the doctor is secretly delving into a dangerous and mysterious sexual adventure. He also discovers (duh!) that his wife has strong sexual unmet needs of her own.

Beware, the children should either not be home or be totally asleep when you watch this film. It 'almost' goes beyond an R rating, it is sexually suggestive and somewhat disturbing, I enjoyed the cinematography and the underlying brutal storyline. Not to be missed...
