Movie synopsis
A father's philandering nature is only one of several problems for a black southern family, but, to 9 year-old Eve, it is the most immediate. As her suspicions deepen, so does her desire to bring the infidelity to an end, even if it means calling down justice on its perpetrator. A stylish, southern Gothic tale of family discord and coming of age by first-time writer/director Lemmons.

Fantastic Movie!!! A Definite Must See...

This movie is one of a kind. A slice of Americana not often seen. You'll laugh, cry, and have evoked every other emotion imaginable. A hauntingly spellbinding and mysterious journey through the real life troubles and triumphs of a family and of their secrets. Very real, complex, and fully developed characters with an original and thought provoking plot. Any and everyone can relate to this film. An additional character and different ending in the Director's cut! Kasi Lemmons is more than a talented actress, She's proven to be an even more profound Writer and Director. Roger Ebert called it the best movie of 1997! And it's still timely today. A definite must see!!

EVE'S BAYOU (DVD,1998)

THE SECRETS THAT HOLD US TOGETHER CAN ALSO TEAR US APART. SUMMER HEATS UP IN RURAL LOUISIANA BESIDE EVE'S BAYOU AS THE BATISTE FAMILY TRIES TO SURVIVE THE SECRETS THEY'VE KEPT AND THE BETRAYALS THEY'VE ENDURED. ROZ BATISTE (LYNN WHITFIELD) IS A BEAUTIFUL AND DEDICATED MOTHER OF THREE, WHO IS FORCED TO ADMIT THAT HER FAMILY IS FALLING APART DUE TO HER PHILANDERING HUSBAND LOUIS (SAMUAL L. JACKSON). HER YOUNGER DAUGHTER, EVE, WITNESSES ONE OF HER FATHER'S INFIDELITIES. STRUGGLING TO MAKE SENSE OF WHAT SHE HAS SEEN, EVE TURNS TO HER OLDER SISITER CISELY,WHO DISMISSES HER FEAR OF THE TRUTH, AND THEN TO HER AUNT MOZELLE (DEBBI MORGAN), A KNOWN PSYCHIC AND RUMORED BLACK WIDOW. UNABLE TO FIND THE UNDERSTANDING SHE IS LOOKING FOR EVE DECIDES TO TAKE MATTERS INTO HER OWN HANDS. AS THE HEAT RISES SO DOES THE TENSION. FOR THE BATISTE FAMILY, THE TIES THAT BIND MAY NOT BE STRONG EBOUGH TO KEEP THEM TOGETHER, AND WHAT THEY LEARN WILL CHANGE THEIR LIVES FOREVER.

Make sure you have the right version!

If you're interested, as I was, in purchasing the Signature Series release of "Eve's Bayou," ask the seller first. Most of them are selling the original DVD release, which doesn't have the director's extended cut or an anamorphic transfer (enhanced for 16x9 TVs). I have yet to find a seller who is actually selling the Signature Series version.

More of a mystery movie

I like the setting in New Orleans. The actor Samuel Jackson was great!! I think it was to sexual for the younger girls to encounter. I really didn't care to much about that part.

The reason I purchased it was because I saw a preview of it on one of the DVD's I had purchased and I wanted to see it.

great family movie

I really enjoyed the movie. It was breath taking and it showed a lot of family values. I would recommend this movie for all to see. It will make you laugh and cry, but most of all it will keep in suspense. Great movie.
