I purchased this for my wife to do 12 X 12 scrapbook pages on and it is excellent for that use. There are a lot of great CD's with borders and paterns to use for page layout on Ebay. It also prints text very fast. It will accept non oem carts and ink just buy from a well respected source as poor ink will give unusable photos.
That said it is a 3 color + black printer so if you are needing a photo printer the Epson Workforce 1400 is a better choice with 5 colors and Black I have two of these one set up to print with black and gray inks for Black and White. Currently Epson is selling both of these referbished with a 1 year waranty at a very good price $109 for the 1100. With the pigment inks and Epson scrapbook archival paper (a very good matte photo paper) the pages should last for your children to show to their grandchildren. An excellent printer and an unbelievable value for the cost.
One tip when not using the printer turn it off this parks the print head and prevents the ink from drying out causing print head clogs. It also stops the auto cleaning cycles which can use a lot of expensive ink. Place some type of cover over it if only a piece of plastic drop cloth to keep the dust out of it when not printing. If you are going to store it or be away several weeks pick up a set of empty cartridges and run distilled water with a small amount of windex for a few cleaning cycles and print until no ink is seen. Place the original cartridges with the covers (You need to save them) in zip lock bags with a lightly moistned cotton ball or bit of paper towel or toilet paper. When you return shake the original cartridges to mix the ink and replace and you will avoid the problems of clogged heads that you read about. I left it stored for nearly a year due to parents needing constant care and in a few minutes it was printing without a problem.
First off, the thing's a monster. It's pretty big compared to other wide format printers. But I kinda like that; it gives the impression that it's built solid and also that I'm getting something for my money. It takes up a lot of space, which isn't an issue for me but it may be for someone else.
The first time I printed with it, I was using photo-editing software and had the print utility's advanced settings on no color correction. For some reason, this made it print VERY red. I'm not talking a slight hue -- I mean it was RED red. I thought it might be bad ink cartridges, so I pulled them out and swapped them with another machine I have. It made no difference. I started freaking out a little, but then I tried it without any photo editing and turned the color correction back on. Then it printed fine. I don't know if that is a problem for this particular machine of if they're all like that. The other Epson printers I've had didn't act that way.
As for print quality -- it's beautiful. This isn't a photo printer, but it prints like one. I don't care for genuine Epson ink on photo paper as it has a flat glare about it and it seems to just lay on the paper as opposed to soaking in. But if you get some refillable cartridges and some non-OEM ink, it's fantastic. Not to mention that it will save a ton of money, too.
As for how it compares to others: It's better. With my business, I go through printers like diapers. I was using HP wide format printers, and while the print quality of HP is fairly good (I still think Epson is better), I got a little tired of how HP engineers their products to fail. I had an HP Officejet K8600, which has 2 replaceable print heads. They went bad, so I bought 2 new ($70.00 each!). The M/C head lasted only a month and went bad. When I called HP about it, they said there was nothing they could do because my PRINTER was out of warranty. The print head had a warranty date on it, but it didn't matter. They only go by the printer.
This Epson doesn't have replaceable print heads. One might argue that HP has a better set-up because you can replace the print heads instead of buying a completely new printer. But why bother? Two new print heads is as much as a new printer. And if you're stupid like me and buy them anyway, they'll have no warranty if your printer is out of warranty. So if they're faulty from the manufacturer, you're out $150.00 and you'll have to go buy a new printer anyway. When you do, I recommend the Epson!
unbelievable deal- get better results than going to a print shop! thought it might be too good to be true- but it's just plain good. takes up a lot of table space, but if you need large format printing it can't be beat for the price. have purchased other epson products in the past, so I expect it to last a good long time, also.
This printer is amazing! First... it's only a printer. It won't fix you breakfast, tie your shoes and pat you on the bottom. It's a printer, plain and simple and that's wonderful. It's also a beast! This thing is STOUT! I have no doubt that it's going to stand up to some heavy use.
The Workforce 1100 is fast... and I mean FAST! You'll be amazed at how quick this thing is and the print and image quality are both flat wonderful.
I bought this for my fiancée to do 12X12 scrapbook pages and it excels in that function. Epson paper is quite pricey but if you look for deals you can do OK. I got a 100 page pack of 13X19 presentation paper for $19 online. I can live with that.
I could see a TON of uses for this printer. If you're looking for a printer and not a printer/toaster/camper this machine is for you!!!
What a nice printer. It handles all of my small office print needs with its wide format.
The main reason I purchased this printer is that there are CIS systems available for it.
The CIS are exterrnal bottles that are connected via tubes to the ink cartridges.
I use the pigment in as it does not smear when dry.
My printing costs are so low that I print everything I care to. Not the case if I weer paying regular price for ink.
The CIS system requires a little smarts to install. I had a small challenge making the hoses not bunch up, but it was worth it.
Get this printer. It makes beautiful photos and burns our the black and white at a quick rate.
Handles 11x17 paper.
