Originally published in 1959, This book examines in-depth the history of Witchcraft from the early middle ages to present. The First Edition has become exceedingly rare.
An historical and human compendium, from original sources in the world's greatest libraries, describing the witches' sabbat and pact, incubi and succubi, eyewitness reports of trials, werewolves, and vampires, sexual relations with the devil, demoniacal possession and exorrcism, poltergeists, barbarous tortures, and the theological and legal theories of inquisition, witchcraft, and demonology. Clarified by hundreds of illustrations, many reproduced for the first time in several centuries.
This book includes a complete account of Burgomaster Johannes Junius, Who was burned at the stake in July, 1628, after being tortured at length and confessing. The letter (photocopied in this book) he wrote to his daughter and smuggled out of prison just before he burned is considered to be "The most moving document recorded in the history of Witchcraft."
Includes an exhaustive list of early writers on witchcraft (1475 - 1540) up to the publication of "Malleus Maleficarum" ( the Hammer of Witches, or Hexen-hammer, 1486) as well as book titles swuch as "Formicarius" (1475). Lengthy bibliography following.
Countless illustrations and accounts inobtainable now. An in depth view into the perverse world of witch hunters, witch trials, the tortures employed & methods used to extract confession, little known facts such as "the cost of witchtrials" showing historical documents where the accused (almost always put to death) has to pay for every aspect of the trial and imprisonment, including the fuel used to burn them !!
An in-depth look at the trial and burning at the stake of Joan of Arc, including her confession, her recant of the confession, court minutes, questions asked, tortures employed, photos of surving documents, Etc.
Historical accounts of surviving confessions, the Salem Witchtrials, The minutes & documents from trials, burning at the stake, etc.
this book seems to be very historical in the accounts of witchcraft and demonology. it lists all decrees put in place the church through time. it makes for interesting reading.
This is a classic collection of information and authority on the subject. It contains a fine index, and anyone would be able to study it well. Excellent graphics and reprints of older engravings. Robbins has gathered together many individual essays and bio's and included them expertly. I believe this book will take the place of many others in your personal library. For the curious or the practitioner it is a "must have" book.
