Movie synopsis
Considered the most morally and emotionally complex of the original Star Wars trilogy, THE EMPIRE STRIKE BACK continues creator George Lucas's epic saga where STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE left off. The Rebel Forces--which include young adventurer Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), rogue pilot Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and the beautiful but seemingly humorless Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher)--have been successful in destroying the Evil Empire's Death Star. However, the Empire's top commander, the terrifying Lord Darth Vader (played by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones), is scanning the galaxy for the Rebels' secret location. After a visually stunning showdown on the ice planet Hoth, the Rebels are forced to flee, and Luke separates from Han and Leia. Masterful storytelling weaves multiple, archetypal plotlines that pit Vader against Han and Leia as he desperately attempts to capture Luke for political--and, secretly, personal--reasons. Luke, meanwhile, finds himself under the tutelage of the tiny but powerful old Jedi Master Yoda, who teaches him the ways of the Force and warns the impatient but talented student against the threat of the Dark Side. Greek tragedy meets a philosophical hero's journey in EMPIRE, a remarkable sci-fi epic in which the performances are as powerful as the spectacular special effects. In 1997 a special edition of the film was digitally remastered with enhanced visual and sound effects. Several scenes--including the one in which Luke Skywalker encounters a deadly Wampa on Hoth--were reedited with more detail while other scenes--such as the one on Cloud City--were added for the rerelease.

Variety - Har. (05/14/1980)

"...As polished and technically proficient as [STAR WARS]....Ford's Han Solo steals the show..."

"...THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is the best of the three Star Wars films, and the most thought-provoking....This one plunges into darkness and even despair, and surrenders more completely to the underlying mystery of the story..."

The best Star Wars movie ever made!

I love The Empire Strikes Back (the original version)! It is my favorite Star Wars movie. It introduced my favorite Star Wars character, Boba Fett.
After the Battle of Hoth, Luke Skywalker has decided to go to the Dagobah system to find Yoda, a Jedi Master. Elsewhere, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3PO are trying to escape the Empire, who wants to use them to lure Luke into a trap set by the evil Lord Darth Vader, leading up to a revealing secret in the Skywalker legacy.
I really recommend this movie to all; Star wars fan or not.

The best Star Wars film of all time

The Empire Strikes Back is, and has always been, in my opinion the best Star Wars film ever made. I love the writing, the characters, the darker feel, the story line, the emotional impact of this film. It is simply incredible.

And this version on DVD is the greatest. Here, you have the film unaltered. The original, beautiful film.

I do not fault George Lucas for making changes to the original Star Wars films. I loved the chance to see them on the big screen in 1997. He is the creator of the Star Wars universe. He loves the story, the characters; he loves Star Wars. And if he wants to go back to these films he truly cares about and make changes, I say more power to him. To continue to work with something that makes you happy is a cool thing.

The trilogy I grew up with is the trilogy I fell in love with. And so, for me, the unaltered trilogy is the only way to go. It is something very special. I had owned the films on VHS. As I mentioned earlier, I don't fault Lucas for making changes in his films, but I was not personally interested in owning the special edition films. I accepted the fact that I would only ever have the original Star Wars on video tape, fullframe. But then I heard the news that the Trilogy finally would be released unaltered, and my heart sang for joy. One of the best additions to my movie collection has been The Empire Strikes Back - the limited edition DVD.

Great Star Wars Movie!

Review For: The Empire Strikes Back (DVD, 2006, 2-Disc Set, Limited Edition; Pan & Scan)

This is the best in the Saga! Following the story of 'A New Hope' The Rebellion are hiding from the Empire in the ice planet Hoth. The Empire has found out where the Rebellion is and throws a full fledged attack against the Republic to get Luke Skywalker. But the Rebellion get away in time, and Luke goes his seperate direction to go to the last surviving Jedi Master Yoda, whom he heard of by Obi-Wan Kenobi. It is a TERRIFIC movie and is very much worth seeing.

Best of the best

One of the better chapters of the Star Wars saga.

The Empire Strikes Back is commonly thought of as the best film in the series. For the sheer scope of the film it beats the other films that follow by a long way. It builds wonderfully on the original film but falls a bit short in youthful wonderment. This is a great film and kids will love it, but for a regular 10 year old nothing beats the the first film.

The best stores in the trilogy

I think of the original trilogy movies this one shows the true dynamic of the galaxy under imperial rule. It shows what is done by the real "good guys" and why they need to do something about their situation. But the best part about 'Empire' is the further character development of Han solo. This film proves how cool he was. When my wife tells me "I love you" and I say "I know", I get something thrown at me. Han got away with it, thats cool.
