Movie synopsis
In the town of El Dorado, wealthy landowner Bart Jason (Ed Asner) is embroiled in a struggle with the MacDonald family, who own a large amount of land just outside town lines. Jason hires gunman Cole Thornton (John Wayne) to scare the MacDonalds in hope that they'll back down. Cole is pleased to discover that his old friend J.B. (Robert Mitchum) is now the sheriff of the town. The sheriff warns Cole that involvement with the crooked Jason will get him arrested. Further circumstances entwine the hired gun with the MacDonald family, and he sets out to destroy Jason. Hawks' unheralded western, with a fine script by Leigh Brackett (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK), features plot similarities to his earlier classic RIO BRAVO.

El Dorado

Review For: El Dorado (DVD, 2000, Sensormatic)

I first saw this movie in a drive-in. John Wayne, Robert Mitchium, James Caan, Paul Fix, charlene Holt, Jim Davis, Johnny Crawford and Ed Asner are the most notibles in this movie.
El Dorado is about the story of a gunman named Thornton (John Wayne) for hire in post Civil War Texas. Wayne`s charecter was contacted to drive away a family who owed a ranch that had a vast water reserve that Asner`s charecter wanted. Thornton decides he did not want the job.
Months later, the sheriff of El Dorado (Robert Mitchium) is a drunk and an esy mark. Thornton gets the sheriff sober and cleaned up and eventually brings law and order to El Dorado.
There`s a scene where Wayne`s charecter goes into a town and meets the town sheriff and his deputy. The actor who played the sheriff was in real life Barbara Hale`s spouse.

El Dorado

This is a clasic western featuring two acting giants. Robert Mitchum stars as the sherrif of Eldorado, a western town. John Wayne plays a "gun for hire" character who answers a telegram from Ed Asner concerning a water rights battle. When the duke arrives in town, the story that Robert Mitchum tells him differs from Asners, so he goes to talk to Asner and turns him down as to taking the job. There are some other good actors in this movie: Christopher George - remember "Rat Patrol"? plays a gunfighter who takes Asner's job; A young James Caan - "Santino Corleone" - co stars as "Mississippi", a knife throwing character whose real character name is Alan Bourdillion Traherne. Also look for R G Armstrong -"White Lightning" - as the head of the MacDonald family. All in all a good story with interesting characters, pretty scenery, and plenty of shoot 'em up action.

"How very ordinary"

Review For: El Dorado (DVD, 2000, Sensormatic)

As a Western movie drama's biggest fan, I feel that this particular movie is simply a cheap imitation of the John Ford classic, Rio Bravo. Robert Mitchum none of the depth of Dean Martin's character in Rio Bravo, John wayne was in both and as always, he was "the Duke". The great actor James Caan was in this movie but did not have the "chops" he showed in portraying Santino "Sonny" Corleone in the Godfather several years later.
This show is just so slowly paced and so predictable, you almost end up waiting and hoping for the end to finally come. It is, however mildly entertaining in small parts but they are so few and far between, you will undoubtedly have to get up or maybe watch something else here and there. That is NOT what one wants from a good old fashioned western.
Rent or buy Silverado, Rio Bravo (looks like the same jail set used) or if you want something realllllly different, watch The Unforgiven sometime. You'll see Clint Eastwood talk about how bad it is to be a gunfighter. Now THAT'S entertainment.

El Dorado DVD John Wayne

Review For: El Dorado (DVD, 2000, Sensormatic)

Typical good versus evil western with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, a thin Ed Asner, and a young James Caan. We liked it because we could watch it as a family and not have to sit on the edge of the couch with the remote trying to hide adult scenes or language from the kids. There is western violence but it is tolerable and the story line is ok and easy to follow. If you enjoy a good western movie and have not seen it I would suggest El Dorado for sure, if you are a John Wayne fan you have already seen this one I am sure.

El Dorado - supurb casting

Review For: El Dorado (DVD, 2000, Sensormatic)

Classic John Wayne movie with an incredible supporting cast, co starring Robert Mitchum at his best. This is the best of westerns due to impeccable casting and Wayne's ability to let the supporting stars shine in their scenes. Michum and Wayne are able to show off their atheltic skills, espically John Wayne's horsemanship.

The dialogue and fight scenes give the movie a near comedy feel. The fight scene with Robert Mitchum is actually more slap stick than action. Though Mitchum and Wayne were both physcially large men they do not loom large over their very capable co stars. James Kaan shows his future promise as a very young comedy- action star.

The plot is not that engaging but flows to the actors talents, this movie was made for Wayne at his best - enjoy
