|When Mehmet Oz or any of New York's leading doctors has a patient whose life depends on losing weight, they call on Joel Fuhrman, M.D. In EAT TO LIVE, Dr. Fuhrman offers his healthy, effective, and scientifically proven plan for shedding radical amounts of weight quickly, and keeping it off.Losing weight under Dr. Fuhrman's plan is not about willpower, it is about knowledge. The key to this revolutionary diet is the idea of nutrient density, as expressed by the simple formula Health=Nutrients/Calories. When the ratio of nutrients to calories is high, fat melts away and health is restored. Losing 20 pounds in two to three weeks is just the beginning. The more high-nutrient food Dr. Fuhrman's patients consume, the more they are satisfied with fewer calories, and the less they crave fat and high-calorie foods. Designed for people who must lose 50 pounds or more in a hurry, EAT TO LIVE works for every dieter, even those who want to lose as little as 10 pounds quickly. No willpower required-just knowledge!|

First off, I started this program to loose weight. I don't believe that God has promised that we won't get cancer like Dr. Furhman suggests in his book. I know several "health-food" people that have died from cancer. I do think we can improve our lifestyle with healthful eating while here on earth, though. I think we should try to eat healthful so not to require unneccessary medications if possible.
I have hypo-thyroidism which makes it very difficult for me to loose weight. I have tried several different programs. A friend of mine was agonizing with me over not being able to loose weight and tried this on the recommendation of her Dr. I was impressed with her results and decided to give this a try.
I feel like Dr. Furhman is a little "anti-animal" products, but was willing to do anything for 6 weeks. I have now been doing his program for 2 months. There have been a few times when I have had plain yogurt or a slice of cheese. I have been impressed with my results 18 lbs.) but that is nothing compared to my friend's results of 40 lbs. in 2 mos.
We tried to eat fairly healthfully before starting this program - only whole grains and very little processed foods. My processed foods linclude canned beans and canned tomotoes. So, somebody that hasn't been eating healthful would probably see more weight loss if they switched to this program.
I do feel good on this program as long as I make sure to eat enough food. I did start having muscle cramps and added back in salt. The muscle cramps went away.
Before starting Dr. Furhman's program I was one of those people that needed protein or I would get a headache (after 5 or so hours.) That is now gone. The first couple of days I felt like I needed to eat all of the time to keep up my blood-sugar, but after that I was fine. Now, I don't feel hungry very often.
I had a blood test to make sure everything was fine before starting this diet. All of my #s are either very good or average. I plan on having another blood test to see if my #'s have improved.
The only thing that I'm really concerned about in this book is whether the people eating animal products in Dr. Furhman's examples were eating organic animal products. I would agree that if you eat animal products where they have been fed hormones or inorganic grains then that cannot be good for us.
Since I wasn't familiar with veganism, I decided to track all the food I was eating in "sparkpeople.com" to ensure I was getting enough calories, vitamins and nutrients. I have been amazed at how much food it takes to get 1200 calories per day. I am almost always full before getting 1200 calories. I almost always get more than the daily requirement of all nutrients and vitamins that are trackable in "sparkpeople.com." It has helped me to understand where my protein is coming from and taught me how to balance my meals eating like a vegan. I don't plan on staying with the vegan part. I have added back in chicken or yogurt occasionally. However, I do plan on sticking with making my salad be the meal and the other things be the sides.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book. But, I think that you need to make sure you eat enough and know where your nutrients are coming from so you don't loose muscle instead of fat.
Many books flood the market, each with a new trend or guru fad for healthy eating and weight managment. Diet fads come and go. What is "hot" today is foolishness next week!
So, if you are going to purchase ONE book, this one is my recomendation.
Another eBayer friend "introduced" me to Dr. Fuhrman's basic principals. Over the months, I watched her "shrink" in size and grow healthier...even to the point fo getting off some meds. The more she learned and shared with me, the more deterimined I became to get Dr. Fuhrman's book and study it myself.
When I tried to check out "Eat to Live" from the public library...it was on a perpetual wait list. I needed to get serious about my health NOW and decided to search eBay for "Eat to Live" Found a paperback copy at decent price and reasonable shipping.
Best $14 investment I ever made! My husband and I have been following "Eat to Live" chapter by chapter...and making some radical life-style changes...while learning so much about nutrition, SAD (Standard American Diet) and the workings of the human body.
In the past two weeks, both of our blood pressures have began to drop (top & bottom numbers) Cltohing fits...even feels loose...yet we are enjoying abundant, healthy food everyday!
Reading "Eat to Live" will open your eyes. Following it's basic principals will change your life...and aren't you ready for that? It is a serious book for people who are serious about "doing the right thing" for themselves!
The information offered in this book is the basis for good health via a high quality nutritional plan. Over the years people claim various fad and bizarre diet as the way to thinness and health, but one thing that is fact: DIETS DON’T WORK. The only way to health is a food plan that works for the rest of ones life. One can’t deviate from the usual food plan, go on some fad diet, and return to business as usual. It never works.
I like Dr. Furhman’s approach and I have read from other books similar plans. His is readable and well documented too by scientific studies. He explains why his food plan works and also why other “diets” fail. More interesting, his plan does assist people I personally know. Some results have been fairly surprising, such as a friend who was prepared to have tumors removed via surgery; he showed up for the procedure only to find out the tumor had disappeared! Others I know have had positive results such as decrease in heart disease symptoms, decrease in diabetes symptoms, decrease in weight.
The difficulty of his ideas is instituting them for you can’t eat the typical meaty, sugary, salty indulgences. So to speak, you can have your cake, you just can’t eat it. Everything comes at a price, and the basic vegan diet is what you are facing. I, personally, am learning to avoid social eatings, food parties, eat-a-thons--for me this is harder than learning the rules of this book. But the promise of excellent health is well worth it, being able to live without medications, to be quick on my feet and pain free as a person over 60 years old is an easy choice. I am learning to live without those indulgences.
I, too, would say anyone who eats should read this book several times, keep it close to them. That is what I do. I believe it is a lifesaver. Some people I know say they’d rather die young and eat their cakes, greasy food, meaty meals. I guess it is a choice. Choose wisely and this helps outline what you are opting for.
Excellent book. This book explains the common sense approach to eating wisely. We know what is bad for us and we know we should not eat a lot of items that we consume regularily, But still we eat foods that are not compatible to our bodies anyway, The results are Heart disease diabeties and obesity.
Joel Fuhrman explains in common layman terms the why you should adapt to his eat to live way (natures way)of eating and he makes you look into nature as a means for understanding nutritional values that are good for your body (the way it was always meant to be - common sense). You realize that food is not just a way of satisfying your hunger but a means of maintaining the body the way it was meant to be fueled. He simply put facts in common sense perspectives for example..Milk is from a cow --- are we a race of baby cows? then why are we drinking it? we can obtain necassary calcium from vegetables.
We eat animals, but are our bodies programed to be carnivores? NO they are not and especially with the hgh hormones being injected in the animals that we consume.
I suggest you read this book with a "natures way" approach to your health. I have been following this way of life eating (not diet)and cannot say enough about the way I feel. I have a tremendous amount of energy, I have a overall better feeling, I sleep better, my awareness and memory are unbelieveable.
Oh and for those ads on TV or at your healthfood stores about body/colon cleansing, you know what I mean... "take these natural vitamins and you will release all the toxins etc etc from your colon" well let me just say - If you follow Joel Fuhrmans "Eat to Live" you will become so normal and regular as far as bowel movements that those gimmicks can take a hike.
I would give this book a better then excellent rating but it is not offered!!!!
I originally bought this book because I had some pounds to lose. I read the book and started the diet. I had immediate success. I felt great after losing weight, but I think that I also felt great because of the nutrient value of the diet, including increased phytonutrients, more fruit, etc. However, I think that an even better thing for you is what you don't eat, namely meat, cheese, sweets, soda etc. I bought this book again to give to a friend who has health problems. I have a bookcase full of diet books, but this one stands out above the rest.
