Dragon Quest IV: Nostalgia and Improvements

    Created: 08/20/10
Going to lead off with my single complaint about the game - Much of the original script and many of the original names of items, spells, monsters, towns, and even main characters' names have been reworked. The only real complaint in this is the feeling that some of the treasured characters from my childhood are no longer the same. What do you mean Mara and Nara are now called Maya and Naya?!? Additionally, most regions have their own "dialect", which can be a little hard to decipher sometimes in the written speech (did we really need to spend the entire first chapter trying to decipher Scottish accents?).

However, once the game starts rolling, it is immediately apparent that they've stayed true to the core of the game. The enemy sprite graphics (at least at rest) are nearly identical to the originals, though they now have snazzy attack animations. All of the music and sound effects are true to the originals, simply de-tinnified. And that feeling is great. With the sound on, if you had ever played Dragon Warrior IV on the NES, it's like stepping back in time. Despite cosmetic changes to the script, the plot and series of actions remains almost untouched.

There are, however, some notable improvements to the game over the original. In the final chapter, instead of relying on often-crummy AI to guide your characters apart from the Hero, you now have the option to issue commands (you can still use the AI if you want, but it's generally not worthwhile). Additionally, there is a bunch of added content, including an additional chapter with some new and difficult challenges and a new party member, an optional sidequest chain, and new and exciting bonuses for some completionists.

Originally, I bought the game out of a fit of nostalgia and after hearing that one of the main problems with the original (the AI) had been rectified. After playing the game the entire way through, I find myself more than satisfied with my decision, and strongly recommend the game to anyone who played the original, or even those who haven't.

    Remembering my childhood

The game is a phenomenal reproduction of the original with several new items added that only enhance the over all playability. The ability to save on the go and play the multiple story lines over and over makes the replay value of the game worth the price one might pay. This series is a true legend in the RPG genre and DQIV is one of, if not the, best.

Best NES RPG! - Remade Classic

    Created: 02/26/10
This is a visual remake of the classic RPG Dragon Warrior IV. Many fans waited a very long time to try this. This was the best RPG of the NES. It still has the classic RPG feel, but it is nowhere as tedious as the NES DWIV. It does not take long to beat compared to many of today's RPGs. It is deep in characters and has great playability. If you haven't played it before, or in a while - don't miss out!

    Classic RPG fare

    Created: 03/07/09
After recently beating Dragon Quest V, I bought this one as fast as I could. Both of the Dragon Quests are remakes of the original for the Famicom(Nintendo) and Super Famicom(Super Nintendo), that were only released in Japan. I've only just started on DQ IV, but it sports great graphics for the DS, yet still retaining a classic feel, plus it come with many features that give it a feel of polish. The battle system, and story is reminiscent of classic RPG's so don't expect something new and innovative, but if you love a fun, well-made, traditional RPG; this is the game for you.

The graphics were pretty good for a DS game. I liked being able to use the duel screens. Overall, I would give this game 5 stars. I really enjoyed it. It is a definite "buy" on Ebay.
