With DR. NO, the first of the James Bond OO7 films, director Terence Young and leading man Sean Connery set the precedent for what would become one of the most popular, influential, and long-lasting series ever made. Bond makes his first famous introduction, "Bond, James Bond," in an upscale casino, to a saucy brunette named Slyvia Trench (Eunice Gayson), who he promptly coaxes into a dinner date. Back at Secret Service Headquarters, M (Bernard Lee) assigns Bond to a mission in Jamaica. An agent who was investigating strange activity with nuclear weapons in Cape Canaveral has disappeared, and Bond is to take up where he left off. His contact, CIA operative Felix Leiter (Jack Lord) reminds Bond that his title, "007," means he has license to kill, not be killed. This advice comes in handy in Jamaica as assassins relentlessly emerge from the woodwork, desperately trying to bring Bond down. Bond makes his way to Crab Key Island to find evil scientist Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman), the primary suspect. There he is met with the obstacle of Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress), a deadly beauty who emerges from the sea in a tiny bikini with a knife holster slung about her hips, in one of the most seductive Bond-girl moments of all time. With a striking lack of gadgets, DR. NO is a heartier mystery than subsequent films in the series, providing for some excellent adventures in which Bond must rely on his own clever spy skills to get out of sticky situations.
What can you say about a movie that lauched a franchise that's lasted almost 50 years? This movie- Dr. No capitalized on the James Bond craze(Ian Fleming's 007 novels were best sellers at that time)and proved to be a lauching pad for Sean Connery's carrer. Great script, great casting(Sean Connery IS James Bond),as well as great direction. Anyone who hasn't seen it should do so immediately!. As for the print this has gone through extensive restoration(frame by frame) and looks as good as it did at the time of release! The extra's give you a look at the creation process(with archival and newer interviews) and flush out the picture of how this classic movie came to be--
I know a lot of people prefer a few of the later entries into the Bond films but I like Dr. No the best because of the newness of it ... the edginess of it and nothing can top Ursula Andress ... she was the first and best Bond cohort. Sean Connery, whether flirting with a tarantula, a beautiful woman, or a fire breathing dragon can not be beat. The new Bond films may be exciting (and it will interesting to see what Daniel Craig does with the role in a few months) but nothing can top Sean when he says, Bond, James Bond ... just like Bogart when he gave the gin joint speach in Casablanca; those words are forever etched in the mind of millions. I had an old video but finally decided I needed to upgrade and EBAY came to the rescue.
A legend begins here. Still going strong after like 22 feature films, James Bond is one of cinema's best characters. Among. The world's most impossibly perfect secret agent is brave, strong, resourceful, ingenious, debonair, seductive, and ruthlessly skilled at his job. Its very action packed so i gotta give it a 5/5
The Disc set is a top quality digital restoration - and I can recommend it..both the film and extra special features disc!
But to me it is still the film ON the disc that sold it: the Film that began the Passion for Bond ! "Dr. No " is all "firsts" - Sean Connery , "Albert R. Broccoli" nickname "Cubby" as producer would be soon a popular one at dinners all over the world. And the icon lines ! The woman actually started it: "Trench .....Slyvia Trench" , she said, and he replied "Bond....James Bond" and the rest is history!
America's FBIguy, J. Edgar Hoover would soon be having author Ian Fleming to lunch, to see if any of his neat spy inventions could be truly and practically employed - especially homing devices - the ones we had then failed as soon as the subject entered any busy traffic.
The introduction of the amazing Miss Moneypenny - M - Q -
The first of the super-villains: Joseph Wiseman as the steel-handed Dr. Julius No. The early villains were most certainly patterned on super-villain, Hitler, who had only recently been vanquished. The real James Bond was a spy in WWII and comrade to Fleming.
Two action pals who often re-appear made their debut here, in "Dr. No", too:
Quarrel senior , whose son, Quarrel Jr. goes on to be so handy and brave in action.
And the amazing Felix Leiter - US CIA - in the first film played by Jack Lord, who did not fail the role in any way!
Of course, the most famous of the "firsts" , the iconic Ursula Andress - the first of the Bond Girls - Muse for all the Bond Girls who came after!
There is the sophistication and seriousness of the matter, but there is the appeal to our cowboy-shows child , in that we enjoy the absolute knowledge that our man will win the game!
This Disc production , again, is a fine one and top quality - hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I loved the books, all the films and now the DVDs to entertain and charm me.
