I'll never forget... It was so long ago when this game first hit the shelves! It was October 31st 1999 when the N64 was in its hay day! This game just made my day when I first played it! In fact... I wasn't even supposed to get this game! I was little and I'll never forget that trip to Wal-Mart! I was supposed be getting Pokémon Stadium! But they were sold out! I was so angry that I bought Donkey Kong 64 just because it was there! And MAN, I 'm GLAD I DID! Because it came not only with the Nintendo Expansion Pack, but an adventure that was so superb and downright perfect to me! This game was everything I wanted above Pokémon Stadium! And years later, here I am doing the review! Here goes!
Storyline: It's a beautiful day on DK Isle. The parrots are swanking and happily flying over the sea when all of a sudden a big menacing mobile fortress decides show up and ruin the peaceful day! Who could it be? Just look at it and you'll answer your own question! Apparently K.Rool is up to his old tricks again but this time it's far worse! Not only has he brought the hell to you (almost crashed it in process) but he threatens to blast DK Isle into smithereens with his deadliest weapon yet, THE BLAST O MATIC!!! The game starts off by your friends suddenly going missing and as for your haul of Golden Bananas, well it's a jiggy hunt now...! You will be driven bananas trying to find them!!! GOOD LUCK!!!
Game play: Your Adventure will start off course by you learning your special abilities thanks to Cranky Kongs potions and by you trying to locate the missing Kongs. (Diddy, Lanky, Tiny, and Chunky.) They are hidden amongst the various worlds and you may need their help of course because every Kong has a different ability. The thing that will make you go ape ****is the fact that every Kong has to find not only 5 golden bananas in each enormous world but they also have to look for their own specific colored bananas, and balloons! And don't forget those annoying fairies and fruit switches! There is allot to keep you busy in this game because you have to switch between the Kongs all the time so you can get around to those certain areas that one Kong can go or shoot at!
Graphics: Donkey Kong 64 has some of the best graphics the N64 had to offer during that time long ago! I am still always amazed when I watch the DK Rap and also the opening intro when parrots are flying! BUT! That part when K. Rools Island Fortress parks right in front of DK Isle is the most epic cinematic I've seen on any N64 title as well as in Donkey Kong series! How many 64 games have you seen that in? All the environments are well developed down to the last 64 bit polygon! It's a shame that Rare had to part ways with Nintendo. And also it's a crying shame that Nintendo won't even put this game on the Wii Virtual Console WTF?
Music Score: Donkey Kong 64 also has the best music score next to Ocarina of Time. The DK Isle theme is my favorite soundtrack! It's so soothing and breathe taking! Like you're actually on the island in real life! The Jungle Japes theme should be very familiar if you have played through the Donkey Kong Country series.
Value: Donkey Kong 64 has immense value! That yellow little cartridge I fought so hard to get on eBay deserves recognition! It's the best Donkey Kong game in the series point blank!
Overall: If you still own a working N64 free of reset errors and dust in the 48 pin contacts then this is a game you MUST HAVE!
DK64 is an excellent title from the makers of GoldenEye, Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, and Jet Force Gemini. Play as any of the five members of the loosely-related Kong family, each with their own unique abilities and talents. Collect golden bananas in 7 different realms as you try to defeat King K. Rool. Or battle against your friends in the fun multiplayer.
Note to ebay buyers: this game requires the Expansion Pak, which increases the memory the Nintendo 64 has.
This is an excellent game with a lot of replayability. It won the "Player's Choice" from Nintendo for its popularity. If you like adventure platforming like Zelda or Mario, this game is right up your alley.

A fun experience lasting many hours, this game is memorable in its charm. As a sequel to Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, it functions well enough (except for the near-ending).
The gameplay is not stellar but it is enjoyable. Being built on a similar engine as Banjo Kazooie, there are many similarities in mechanics and visual style to the game which all and all in largely disappointing. This is not to say the mechanics and visual style are poor, but to see them mostly unchanged from one game to another gives
The introduction of the newer Kongs is a pleasant sight - Lankey has endeared himself to me - but it grows stale quickly. The new-ish feature to unlock and switch between five different Kongs is an interesting novelty, but it greatly slows the game down at points when one completes a part only to have to do it again with a slight twist.
Mechanically the game suffers from the same issues as Banjo Kazooie: bad camera angles and sometimes unintuitive character responses. The notable part is trying to control Diddy in jetpack mode; that is the most obnoxious part of the game reminding one of the flying parts in Banjo Kazooie which were equally annoying at times. Other than those two issues the controls handle fairly well.
The multiplayer experience is lackluster; good for a few rounds once every few months, but it isn't anything special.
The biggest downer of the game is near the end where one must complete two minigames in order to unlock the final boss. One of them is the original "Donkey Kong" arcade game, the other is some ZX Spectrum title called "Jetpac". Both of these are difficult and extremely out of place for no reason other than various pieces of developer moon logic. They have absolutely no place in the game and by all rights should not have been included.
Overall a decent game. Not stellar, but fairly good; mostly I purchased this title for nostalgic purposes (I rented it when I was younger but never finished it). The difficulty in some parts caused a few rage-quits, but thankfully most of the truly difficult parts aren't required to complete the game (except for the two aforementioned minigames)
Nostalgia much, I remember growing up at the local youth club in my home town and this being the multiplayer game we were all playing. It's incredibly simple and immature but thats what makes it so fun. With the complication of newer games, a lot of people miss out on the action because they arent "gamers".
The 1 player story mode, while being extremely easy is pretty fun as well, as you have to figure out puzzles and it makes you implement certain "character specific" abilities to progress through the levels of the game.
If you are wanting to take a step back in time and play something fun alone or with a group of friends. This game is easily in my top 10 games for N64.
Other games to try out: Conkers Bad Fur Day, Goldeneye, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Star Fox 64 - all have great multiplayer modes
Donkey Kong 64 starts with a well-worn storyline: Donkey Kong's isle of paradise faces destruction by an invading K.Rool and his crocodile Kremlings. His allies through the game to defeat K.Rool are Diddy Kong, Lanky Kong, Tiny Kong, and Chunky Kong.
The main thrust is to find 200 golden bananas in the main world and in the seemingly standard individual stages: an underwater level, a forest level, a jungle level, an industrial level, etc.
I never believed details in the reviews are great so I'll let you discover the game by yourself. The game overall is great, you'll have lots of hours of fun and this game is a must for every collection.
Recommend it to all!
