Movie synopsis
Spike Lee's racial and political filmmaking bent is given the full treatment with this simmering expos´┐Ż of racial tensions in a New York City neighborhood one scorching summer day. The film, written by Lee (and nominated for an Oscar), follows a group of racially diverse inhabitants from Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood as they spend their day trying to avoid the oppressive heat. These include African American pizza deliveryman Mookie (Lee), the racially sensitive Buggin' Out (Giancarlo Esposito), and the silent, boom-box-blasting Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn). Also thrown into the mix are Sal (an Oscar-nominated Danny Aiello), the Italian-American proprietor of Sal's Pizzeria, as well as his two sons, Pino (John Turturro) and Vito (Richard Edson), who hold completely opposing attitudes when it comes to race. After Buggin' Out tries to organize a boycott of Sal's because of the lack of racial diversity on his shop's Wall of Fame, the tensions explode in an act of senseless violence. Lee's film is an electric work of political entertainment that confronts sensitive racial issues head-on. He deftly blends humor and drama as well as using specific music to further amplify his theme (Public Enemy's song "Fight the Power" actually becomes the film's main catalyst for action). Boldly closing the film with opposing quotes from Malcolm X and Martin Luther King on the nature of race relations, Lee leaves it up to the viewer to decide if Mookie's actions were the correct ones. Aiello and Esposito are standouts in an all-star cast that includes Lee himself, his sister Joie, "discovery" Rosie Perez, and the married team of Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. Always one to spark controversy, Lee's summer drama finds the filmmaker at the peak of his craft.

Surprisingly good 22 yrs on.. Witty satire of Brooklyn

So I didn't see this till now, 22 years after its release.

Here's the thing, a good film stands the test of time, and Mr. Lee's film certainly does. Sure the clothes and hair are all reto 80s, but the story is well told of life and loves of a small neighborhood.

I especially thought the thing about the pizzeria, not having any black celebrity pics, was just the sort of seed of social injustice to start the riot that ends in death of a black man. And life would be a lot better if we all just did the right thing.

If you haven't seen it or seen it in a while, watch it. It is one of Spike Lees best works in my opinion.

Do the Right Thing

"Do the Right Thing" is Spike Lee's masterpiece about racial tension that arise between African Americans and the Italians. Set in just about the hottest day in New York, this film makes you feel the hostilities that are about to erupt. But more than just about racial conflict the movie also makes one think about what is the right thing to do. The interpretations vary which is what a movie should offer. No spoonfeeding. A great film. Highly recommend it!!!

Spike Lee did the right thing with this DVD.

I bought this two disc DVD 1 month ago because the movie is one of my favorites. Spike Lee uses many innovative directing techniques to address the controversial topics of discrimination, prejudice, racism, and social injustice without being offensive. I recommend this 2 disc version when compared to the single disc version. The extra features such as Lee's director commentary on disc two provide helpful insight not found on the single disc DVD version. This 2 disc set is well worth the money. Great movie.

Do The Right Thing (1998) a Spike Lee Joint

Review For: Do the Right Thing (DVD, 1998, Widescreen)

Need i say more, its a spike lee movie. He hates white people and is very racist. I love it. Its a wonderful moive and def one to have in your collection. It depicts a day in Bed Stuy NY (brooklyn). It is wonderful at demonstrating hate, love, sex, poverty, entreprenueral people and the average working class. Acting isn't terrible, its actually decent. Again, this is a spike lee movie..
