Album Notes
Personnel: Bob Seger (vocals); Don Felder, Drew Abbott, Waddy Wachtel, Davey Johnstone, Danny Kortchmar (guitar); Alto Reed (saxophone); Craig Frost, Roy Bittan, Bill Payne, Michael Boddicker (keyboards); Chris Campbell (bass); Russ Kunkel (drums); Bobbye Hall (percussion); Glen Frey, Bonnie Raitt, Shaun Murphy, Laura Creamer, Joan Sliwin (background vocals).Recorded at Studio 55 and Crystal Sound Recording, Los Angeles, California and Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Alabama. As he'd been touring the States constantly since the late '60s, Bob Seger decided to take a well-deserved rest after the completion of dates in support of his chart-topping 1980 album, AGAINST THE WIND. On his next studio release, 1982's THE DISTANCE, Seger sounds reinvigorated, picking up his career exactly where he left off, with a mix of working class rock & roll and reflective ballads. While THE DISTANCE is a more polished effort than his raw and rocking '70s hits, signaling Seger's future direction, it features some of his best work. Individual highlights include the rocker "Making Thunderbirds," as well as "Roll Me Away," "Shame on the Moon," and "Little Victories."

The Distance, underplayed, under-rated

On of Bob Seger's best attempts in my book. The opening chords of "The Distance" just stun you and continue onward all the way to "Little Victories". Why regular "Classic Rock " radio doesn't play nore of this album is a complete mystery to me. "Making Thunderbirds" is awesome! You can't go wrong with any of the songs on this release. Should be instilled as a "Classic"! Sonically very clean and crisp. Any audiophile would enjoy the clarity of this recording. Guys, you did good.........

Bob Seger "The Distance" CD

Always a favorite, Bob Seger's writing and soulful almost haunting vocals really come through on this CD. I consider it his last best work before he took the 10 year break. I recently saw him in concert with his "FACE THE PROMISE" tour and he was even more powerful than when I first saw him 20 years ago. Timeless lyrics that still ring true today. He is an American treasue. The true voice of average hard working people for generations to come. Nothing fancy, just incredible lyrics and Rock and Roll the way it should be.

One of Bob's Best!!

I bought this album on vinyl when it was released in 1983 and have always loved it. Without a doubt Roll Me Away is the biggest hit on it and still gets considerable airplay on classic rock syations today. Having grown up less than a hundred miles from Detroit in the same era as Seger I can relate to his lyrics and songs. Making Thunderbirds is no doubt nostalgic to the thousands of former auto workers. My favorite song on this album is Coming Home which he does in his own incomparable gravelly blues style. As I recall, this was one his last albums to be released on 8-track at his insistance to make sure his fans with older equipment could enjoy it. Can you imagine any artist today who would do that?

Among Bob Seger's finest-The Distance

What I love the best, is Little Victories. It really ROCKS, and actually lifts my spirits. Roll Me Away will certainly lift ones spirits also. There are three nice, but slow songs. The rest of the tunes are all excellent.
You can't go wrong owning this classic. I had sought this CD out to replace my vinyl record.

kinda a rare title

I love this cd! Almost nobody knows these songs, and certainly almost none of them get radio airplay, which is sad. I saw Bob Seger back in 1995 and he put on an almost 3 hours show that was phenomenal, he is one of my favorite artists from the 70's & 80's and if you like his music this title is a must own...even though its a bit pricey because of its rarity.
