Perhaps one of the greatest WW2 adventure films ever, does not show it's age at all. It is certainly gritty and was one of the early films to show over the top violence. Now if you are looking for WW2 history purchase the longest day, but if you are looking for hard boiled adventure, you can not do better than this.
The film deals with Lee Marvin and his sargent Richard Jaekal being given the difficult job of taking 12 military convicts on a suicide mission the night before d-day. The convicts will be given amnesty if they show true valor. The film features an all star cast in the roles of the dozen the likes of which you could never cast today...Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalas, Clint Walker,Trini Lopez,Charles Bronson and many others.
Some of the characters are sympathetic such as Charles Bronson who is in jail for shooting an officer who was fleeing a battle with all the medical supplies and Jim Brown who was being beaten by a gang of racist or Clint Walker who killed a man by accident. Others, such as Cassavetes are bad to the bone but possibly redeemable. However,Savalas' character Magot is not only evil but sadistic,a racist and a sociopath. He is also one of the best film villians ever!
Much of the films sucess is do to the fine work of a fine cast who are able to project the good in a bunch of less than sympathetic characters. The exception is of course Magot. The special effects are first class and do not at all seem dated! If you have not seen this great film, now is the time. If you have see it again!
With Actors like Lee Marvin,Ernst Borginine,Charles Bronson,Telly Savalas, and Clint Walker it has to be good.
Lee Marvin puts together a unit of Convicts, and Psychos to go on a Suicide mission to Kill Nazi Brass.
From Lee Marvin putting his unit together all though training and then on to there mission it's a top notch Movie all the way.
This is by far my favorite War movie.
Filmed in 1967 running time is 150 Mins. Not Rated
The highly improbable World War II story of the "Dirty Dozen" is that a bunch of military convicts gets recruited into a special unit that can use their "skills" (which are not available from anyone else in the world). It's definately worth watching - a pretty good "down in the dirt and mud" DVD movie (which looks like it has been cleaned up a bit over the VHS version of this movie). As far as reality goes, it doesn't do much - it's not a real story. Don't even bother with any type of meaning to the story and don't feel bad if you miss the message - there isn't any. It's just pure war entertainment with an all-star cast - and quite exciting. Well-made North American formatted DVD from 2006. Good, old movie with great actors (Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Donald Sutherland, Ernest Borgnine and Telley Savalas) In blu ray is even better. The picture and sound quality is awesome!

It's definately worth watching - a pretty good "down in the dirt and mud" WWII DVD movie. Of particular note is this 1998 issue on a North American DVD format was not manufactured as well as other similar DVDs..... unless this is a very good offer when compared to the others, you may want to reconsider this particular edition.
