Movie synopsis
Two escaped convicts -- one black (Poitier), one white (Curtis), and both shackled in the same pair of handcuffs -- battle the elements and each other as they travel Southern back roads eluding the ever-approaching posse. Though the device of binding two racial antagonists together for survival may be rather obvious, the performances make the result compelling. Watch for Lon Chaney, Jr. along the way.

1958 Sidney Poitier & Tony Curtis: 9 Oscar Nominations

Review For: The Defiant Ones (VHS)

Having escaped from a Southern prison chain gang, Joker Jackson (Tony Curtis) & Noah Cullen (Sidney Poitier) are on the lam shackled together by a 29 inch long, 3 pound iron chain & handcuffs. Their heaviest problem is that they despise each other because one is Caucasian & the other is Negro.

They are moving on foot trying to escape to freedom on the back roads while being relentlessly chased by a posse of police with bloodhounds. Although they are racial adversaries, Jackson & Cullen have to put their animosities for each other aside if they are going to survive.

Along their escape route, a lonely Southern woman, who's also a racist (Cara Williams), breaks the chain that binds them together; then deliberately sends Cullen (Poitier) away & to a sure death. However, Jackson (Curtis) is placed in the precarious position of having to decide whether to save only himself or save Cullen.

Released in the US during the heights of racist tensions, "The Defiant Ones" sent a powerful message of racial tolerance through his action-packed suspense.
This film was nominated for 9 Oscars & won 2 in 1958 for Best Cinematography, Sam Leavitt & Best Original Screenplay, Harold Jacob Smith & Nedrick Young. Stanley Kramer, director & producer of the film, paid $75,000 for the original screenplay (the highest price paid for one in 17 years) & his technical advisor was a real Southern chain gang escapee who was still wanted. Lon Chaney makes an appearance.

The film's in B&W and runs for 1 hour & 37 minutes that seem to zoom by~
