Deep Purple-Cal Jam 74

Buy this dvd just to see Blackmore destroy a 70,000 dollar video camera, have his roadie set an amp on fire, then it explodes, you might even enjoy the music which was featuring recent new editions of Glenn Hughes bass and vocals and unknown David coverdale on vocals. As with most Purple dvds the cameramen seem to stay away from Blackmore especially during his many solos. Only 2 songs from the mach 2 line up find there way on the dvd, perennial classic Smoke on the water which here is given a funky/jazzy feel with both Hughes and Coverdale trading vocal duty and the climatic Space Truckin, which gives the other 2 original members Jon Lord on key boards and Ian Paice drums a chance to shine. Picture and sound are great quality and Coverdale has some fine moments as he continually looks for the setting sun and complains of swallowing flies. My one question after all these years would be to find out what the members of Emerson,Lake and Palmer thought as they had to go after Deep Purple.

Deep Purple 1974

I was at this show. It was a wild night and my main reason was Deep Purple. More so with Ritchie Blackmore. As a true Blackmore die hard fan. I liked this version of DP so the DVD concert was a natural purchase. The video and sound are a great quality considering it was recorded in 1974!!

My only problem was the new bass player. But I guess we're not here to review the band are we. With the exception of GH, the performance was great. Deep Purple was made for the stage and not the studio. This is where they shined. Although this was if my memory serves me, one of the last performances with Ritchie Blackmore, it was still an excellent show that should be part of any collection by true Deep Purple fans.

For those of the new heavy metal, get this!! You need to know where real hard rock-heavy metal came from from the greatest of them all.

Deep Purple - Live in California 74 (2006, DVD)

I had this on VHS back in the UK, and had been looking for a DVD of it for a while. I liked the Mk3 Deep Purple line-up more for the songs, although I was always impressed with the way David Coverdale went from unknown part-time singer to full-on rock star - he really gave it everything, and had such a great voice. Of course, the biggest change between Deep Purple Mk2 and Mk3 was the addition of Glenn Hughes and his added vocals changed the sound of the band considerably. It was a shame that his ego got in the way, and you can pretty much tell that he's always trying to get the attention with his screams, always trying to overshadow Coverdale. Ritchie Blackmore is in great form on the DVD, up to the point of trashing two Fender Stratocasters (what a terrible waste) and blowing his amps up. Jon Lord and Ian Paice are also in fine form, and if you are looking for a way to view the band in explosive form, this is pretty much it. The film quality isn't brilliant but the show makes up for it.

Purples best songs, great performances by all band members, and the
footage of Blackmore that nearly got Deep Purple banned from playing
in the U.S. He destroys at least 3 Stratocasters, tosses amps off
stage and breaks 1 Strat on a very expensive T.V. camera. And some
interesting bonus material included on the DVD.

Deep Purple-Live in California 1974

A must have for Deep Purple fans! Awesome live performance in front of 200,000 fans. The band is in top form and each have their time in the spot light for a solo, culminating with Richie Blackmore smashing three guitars a television camara and blowing up his amp! I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
