This is a very intriguing movie with original thought.
Light Yagami is an ace student who is bored out of his mind. Finding the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami Death God, Ryuk, who is equally bored with his own existence, Light decides to use that power of the Death Note to rid the world of all evil. Any human who happens to have his/her name in the book will die.
Light decides to start using the book to take out the world's criminals. This obviously catches the attention of the police and the criminals that haven't shuffled off this mortal world just yet. The police sends the legendary detective L to track down the killer and it isn't long before he's hot on Light's trail. As Light slowly discovers more of the powers held within the Death Note, he decides to try and use it to eliminate L, the only person standing between him and a "perfect world".
Light gets some unexpected help from his father, the head of Japanese National Police Agency who leaves his files about the case lying about the house. Using the files, Light can stay one step ahead of the Police but now he's picked up a strange person following him.
The conflict between Light and his adversary, L, sets up an interesting contest between two different views of morality and man's obligations to use whatever means necessary to effect change in the world.
I decided to buy this because I was tired of watching Youtube's low quality videos and I wasn't going to watch one episode a week on t.v. What I liked about the one I bought was that it came with the vol. 1 manga book of the show, so that was really cool. And what I really love about this is that you can choose to watch the Japanese version with english subtitles so you can hear the original voice actors or you can watch the English dubbed version which has English voice actors. The only thing I can really say bad about this dvd is that it only has four episodes, but looking at how great the show is, I think it is worth it. 9/10
So far this anime has me hooked. So hookd, that I bought volume 1 for $20 JUST to get 1 episode ahead of adult swim. Anyway, I've shown all my friends and my brothers and we're all hookd on it together.
It's an intelligent anime unlike many others. Light does what so many people would like to have the power to do. It's not sensless killing in his eyes, it's purification.
The plot is good the music is good and the voice acting is good. Volume 1 was awesome, i'm looking forward to the see the rest of the series.
Up to this point I have never been a big fan of anime in general, with the exception of the Miyazaki films. However, this show really impresses me. The characters are well written and the overarching story is very interesting. Make sure you see this series from the beginning, because the plot unfolds over a fairly tight serial format. This DVD has the first four episodes so if you want to know what the fuss is about, check it out.
A curious way of looking at death and revenge and the way some people look at others. The mind games that people play are well played in this anime. Everyone has known a person who plays games to get at you, and its interesting to see how the story puts this to use. A well written story would recommend, but not for the young.
