    Movie synopsis

There aren't many cops left like Eldon Perry (Kurt Russell). A member of the Los Angeles Police Department's Special Investigations Squad (SIS), veteran Perry is no stranger to the violence of the streets and the tough decisions that come with the job. He rarely questions the orders given by his powerful boss, Jack Van Meter (Brendan Gleeson). When Van Meter's nephew, Bobby Keogh (Scott Speedman) joins SIS and becomes Perry's partner, the stakes are raised. Keogh, who idolizes both his uncle and Perry, is eager to prove himself. But the naïve rookie has no idea how deep the corruption in the department runs. Set during the racially charged days before the Rodney King verdict and the ensuing L.A. riots, DARK BLUE also looks at racism within the department through its focus on Assistant Chief Arthur Holland (Ving Rhames), who questions the SIS brotherhood and is determined to be the first black chief of the LAPD. Russell is a powerhouse as Perry, a man who has made some difficult decisions in the name of justice. Directed by Ron Shelton (BULL DURHAM, TIN CUP) and based on a story by James Ellroy, the film also stars Michael Michele, Lolita Davidovitch, and rapper Kurupt.

    Great Actor - Bad Movie!

    Created: 07/06/06
Dark Blue starring my man, Kurt Russell. Kurt gives a wonderful performance as a Los Angeles policeman who has become misguided in his view of right and wrong. On the eve of the LA riots, after realizing the error of his ways, Russell tries to right things but is too late to turn back was has happened to his life. Kurt's performance and a realistic recreation of the LA riots in the final scenes of the film are the only bright spots in this muddled film. It is hard to follow, and amazingly dull at times. The trailer for this movie gave the impression that there was a lot more excitement happening in this film. I was disappointed, mostly by the fact that the LA riots were used merely as a backdrop to a film about police corruption. Kurt Russell can do no wrong in my eyes, but this film misses the mark. Sorry Kurt, it just didn't do it for me.

Dark Blue and a relation to Ethics

    Created: 02/09/07
Kurt Russell is not one of my favorite actors, but this movie is an excellent depiction of an ethical dillema and a dirty cop's struggle to do things right. I teach ethics to law enforcment officers and use snippets of this movie to illustrate unethical behavior. This is a sure companion to "Training Day"
