Darby O'Gill And The Little People (Sean Connery!)
Created: 01/11/09
Terrific movie for family entertainment. Old, but still fun. Lots of music, fun and fantasy. Stars Sean Connery as a very young man!
Plot is pretty stock -- Man (Darby O'Gill) has lovely daughter. Handsome man (Sean Connery) comes to town. Romance is in the air.
Mix with Leprechaun's - not just any Leprechaun but the King of Leprechauns - and you have something to smile about! Small children will be entranced with the "Little People". They are so cute and spritely and full of mischief. Makes you want to believe!
Older ones will love the action and shenanigans. Guaranteed to get them giggling throughout. What the Leprechaun's don't get into, Darby does. The King of Leprechauns outsmarts him many times with Darby getting more and more conniving and crafty. He is also getting more and more frustrated.
Grown ups (are any of us really grown up?) will enjoy the scenery and history of Ireland that is tossed in. The music is lively and fun to sing along to. We are still singing, "Oh, he is my dear, my darling one! His eyes they sparkle like the sun. No other, no other can match the likes of him".
The entire movie was just fun - pure and clean. The scenes in the meadows made me want to run and sing right along with the characters.
Does Darby outsmart the Leprechaun? Does Darby keep his job? Does his beautiful daughter capture the heart of the handsome stranger? How about the Leprechauns? How do they fare?
A good "watch". Enjoy!!

A sweet and wholesome trip down memory lane

This was one of my favorite movies as a child, and I bought it because I wanted to share it with my child. (It's also an early Sean Connery film, although I didn't realize that when I was younger.)
The movie follows Darby O'Gill through a battle of wits with his friend and adversary King Brian, King of the Leprechauns. There's also a love story (which involves Connery), which is sweet but moves a bit too fast (the way most Disney romances do). The special effects are dated, but the banshee and death coach were still scary enough when I was little.
So how does it appeal to a child born in 2008? Well, it initially didn't catch her attention, but she ended up loving and dancing to the songs. Sound like a positive review to me!

A great movie to watch on St. Patty's Day!

I have always enjoyed our family's tradition of eating an Irish supper, and then watching an old Disney favorite, "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" on St.Patty's day.
It's a very cute story about an old mans encounters with leprechauns. I don't want to give away too much about the movie; although I can mention that a very young Sean Connery has one of the roles in the film.
We usually would rely on the Disney channel to watch it on St.Patricks day, but I recently bought the DVD on EBAY, and now enjoy watching it at our leisure.

This is an excellent movie the whole family will love. It is about a old man who like to spin tales to the point that no one believes him. So when he meets the King of Leprechauns he is laughed at. This is a wonderful movie and one of the highlights of the movie is seeing a young Sean Connery sing! Don't miss out adding this Disney classic to your collection.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People (2004, DVD)

This movie is a fabulous trip into the world of the Irish and the "Little People", the leprechauns, as the tale winds around an old man's, Darby O'Gill, attempts to provide everything for his daughter he can. An early glimpse at Sean Connery, before James Bond 007, as the young hire to the Landlord set to replace Darby in his job as caretaker of the land. Wonderful, carefree and happy tunes throughout the film leave you wishing to take a trip to the emerald isle to look for the leprechauns yourself. GREAT for ALL ages. The kids should love it. Action, romance, spooks and magic. What more could you ask for??
