The Sidekick 2008 is a much better cell phone that the previous versions of the Sidekick such as the regular Slider LX & ID. It's got quite a few improved features like a 2.0-megapixel camera, a nice 2.6-inch display, video recording/playback, stereo Bluetooth. It is smaller, measuring 4.7 x 2.3 x 0.7 inches and it also comes with much more things on it. The Sidekick 2008 has applications like email, instant messaging, picture messaging & video messaging. It has a standard trackball on the right hand side for scrolling and it also buttons for shortcuts & commands that you can assign.
The call quality is actually pretty good—you can hear loud and clear with minimal background noise/static...it does not take great photos or video but I guess it is something we could live with.
There are a lot of available Applications, Ringtones, Themes, Games etc available to download. Prices vary, but they are affordable. If you want to take advantage of the full potential of this phone, (Web Browsing, Email, IM's, new themes & wallpapers, ringtones, and other applications) you will need the optional Data Service Plan which T-Mobile offers. (Unlimited web access with 400 text messages is about 24.99, Unlimited web access with unlimited text messages is about 34.99) *Prices may vary in your area. Prices are just estimates ONLY.
**The keyboard makes a chicklety sound when you text but you will soon get used to it. It's not that bad thou. However the Keys are far enough apart for ease in texting.
***One thing I found inconvienent is when you are on a call (let's say to one of those dreadful automated systems which ask you questions and in saying to press 1 for yes, 2 for no, yadda yadda), if the flip slider is closed shut, (which is more comfortable) You have to flip it open each time to use the QWERT/numeric pad to press the numbers, then flip it closed again. What a pain!! Overall, I give this phone a 8 or 8.5 out of 10.
T-Mobile is Ending the Sidekick line. I am currently a sidekick user. And yesterday i received a text messege from t-mobile stating " Sidekick data service no longer available 5/31 move to a ne plan now and get a $10 BONUS Credit applied to acct within a week of move." After recieving this message i called the Customer Service line and they stated that they are stoping the Sidekick line all together. They told me that the 3G networking is ending 5/31 and the phone will no longer be able to use any internet service. No More Email. No more Youtube. Even heard the calender and most of the phone will no longer work. They told me i could still use the phone for calls and text but will not have any internet service at all! I bought a Sidekick 2009 LX not even 10 months ago new from a T-mobile store and now all the features i bought it for will no longer work. I have been using sidekick devices for several years now and Loving the $1 a day service i recieved. ( I owned a sidekick 2008 version before this 2009 LX.
ALSO!!! They are removing the internet service from the phone and upping the charge for the plan to $70 a month for unlimited talk/text. instead of the 30 bucks a month i was paying for my current plan!
DO NOT BUY A SIDEKICK!!!!!! YOU WILL BE VERY DISSAPOINTED!!!!!!! T-MOBILE HAS Let down all of the Sidekick Users. The customer support told me that if i would go buy a $500 Android Phone they would credit me $10 to my account but they couldnt do anything else for me.
PLEASE!!! Search in Google or Yahoo about it. i used "Sidekick data changes 5/31" and im sure you can find a lot of upset Sidekick users!!
I am trying to save all those buyers that LOVE the sidekick as i do too!! But they will be worthless in a couple of months.
I hope i just saved ya from buying a rippoff!!!
Awesome phone. This phone has great features on it like a camera, video recorder, media player, bluetooth, full keyboard, flip screen. The full keyboard is great for texting or emails. The phone is easy to nagivate around if you have the slightest knowledge. I would recomend this phone to anyone looking for a great phone with great features. The Sidekick phone is a T Mobile phone but will work with any other GSM provider.
I like the sidekick 2008 also known as the gekko or the shell. This phone is way smaller, and lighter than the LX. I love the shape of the phone, its more rectangle than rounded like the LX, it fits in my hands perfectly. There are many pros and cons about this phone, at the moment there are some bugs if you do not have a data plan with tmobile. As many of you know, if you do not have the data plan, when receiving and SMS text message, in your inbox it will only show numbers instead of contact names. But, once you hit reply and if the number is a contact in your phone book, it'll show the name at the top. Thats not a big issue, but does get annoying at times. Another thing is, the phone doesn't alert you when you have an SMS text but by online the trackball lighting up a blue color. This does get frustrating as you don't know when you have a text. To bypass this, edit your sound profiles and change the alert reminder from 10 minutes to 2 minutes. Thus, once you have a text, within 2 minutes an alert will go off as "New Message" if you have not read it. This bug will be removed once Danger, the makers of the phone, create a fix. The fix will be over the air to your phone so no worries about downloading softwares on your computer and to your phone. The cons about this phone compared to the LX is, it has a smaller screen, does not have flash on its camera, nor have mini lights on the edge of the phone for the mood light feature the LX provides. The pros about this phone is it is lighter, it has a 2.0 mega pixel camera rather than a 1.3 that the LX has. Also, the removable shells and custom shells are very nice. It'll make your sidekick 2008 unique than any other phone. Overall, I believe this is a good phone, especially for teens and kids who love the swivel and the main feature of this phone is to provide texting with the full qwerty keypad. I can state this because I am myself a teen, 17 years old, and I love this phone. I would recommend this as a gift to any of you who have children, or would like a phone for texting.
the sidekick is a good phone, but the problem is after a while the screen will go black and then you are stuck with no screen. i just purchased my third sidekick because of this problem, if i didn't like the phone so much i wouldn't have bought 3 of them. if your looking to purchase one just keep in mind that eventually the screen will go black and you will not be able to see anything, and you will have to get another phone.
