Three vintage B-movies of the detective genre are compiled on this special collection. MR. WONG, DETECTIVE stars the legendary Boris Karloff as the ingenious Chinese detective who is pitted against the poison gas killers. DICK TRACY'S DILEMMA has the hard-boiled sleuth (played by Ralph Byrd) tracking down The Claw and his gang of hooligans when their sticky fingers lead them to a fortune in furs. And finally, in DICK TRACY MEETS GRUESOME, Tracy must fight a race against the clock to stop a fiendish villain named Gruesome before he unleashes a lethal gas that turns human beings into statues.

1939 Boris Karloff is Detective James Lee Wong

I'm reviewing two of Boris Karloff's films from 1939, since this is the only slot I could find to do so.

The master of B-flick mysteries & horrors, Boris Karloff, was in a series of films playing the lead character, "Mr. Wong." He's a detective with a pristine moustache, made to seem Chinese.

"Mr. Wong in China Town" (1939) is a 63 minute B&W flick that's a detective intrigue; but, is as much a minor examination of China's struggles with Japan during the 1930's. This episode is about a Chinese princesses murder while inside Wong's office. Several bizarre murders follow hers.

To confound the inscrutable Detective Wong, as well as add comic relief, the bumbling Inspector Street & his half-wit reporter girlfriend are introduced. Viewing Karloff playing the Chinese detective is a kick.

The second episode is "The Mystery of Mr. Wong." This time, Detective Wong is commissioned to locate a priceless bu cursed sapphire: "The Eye of the Daughter Moon." Because the stone was stolen in China, then smuggled into the United States, Mr. Wong winds up in California's Chinatown, and specifically to the "House of Hate."

Here's a little history of the Mr. Wong series of flicks: because "Charlie Chan" and "Mr. Moto" films were so successful, Monogram Pictures bought the rights to Hugh Wiley's Mr. Wong character. During Boris Karloff's break from horror flicks, he played Mr. Wong in 5 mysteries~
