Movie synopsis
“Contraband” stars Mark Wahlberg as Chris Farraday, a man who has long since given up his life of smuggling and crime in favor of a security job and the family life. However, Chris is reeled back into his old life after his brother-in-law Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) makes a mess of a drug deal with big-time mob boss Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi). This action drama film kicks into gear when Chris decides to run contraband in order to settle Andy’s debt and keep his family from harm. When the plan falls apart, Chris is forced to navigate murky waters where hit men, drug lords, cops, and criminals of his past await in order to free his family of the debt to Briggs. The run-time on this DVD is 109 minutes and the film is rated R by the MPAA. A U.S. remake of an Icelandic film called “Reykjavik-Rotterdam,” “Contraband” is directed by Baltasar Kormakur and also stars Kate Beckinsale and Ben Foster. “Contraband” is a face-paced action drama DVD with a well-chosen cast.

Editorial reviews

"Wahlberg has a way of making lethal look neighborly and necessary, which he does here....Those qualities go a long way to keep CONTRABAND afloat."
Los Angeles Times - Betsy Sharkey (01/13/2012)

"This is an uncommonly well-crafted action adventure..."
Wall Street Journal (01/13/2012)

3 stars out of 5 -- "This Americanized version of the 2008 Nordic thriller REJKJAVIK ROTTERDAM transfers the original's gritty, violent action into an entertaining and intense starring role for Mark Wahlberg..."
Box Office - Pete Hammond (01/12/2011)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Amid all the grain and grit, Ribisi's colourful villain is as splashy as any Pollack painting, and his unhinged, ratty turn adrenalises the picture."
Total Film - Jamie Graham (04/01/2012)

"An obligingly tense, scruffy addition to the one-last-crime genre."
Movieline - Alison Willmore (01/12/2012)

"A watchably unpretentious yarn as unassuming as its blue-collar hero."
Sight and Sound - Nicolas Rapold (04/01/2012)

"The Mark Wahlberg smuggling drama CONTRABAND benefits from elegant simplicity."
A.V. Club - Nathan Rabin (01/12/2012)

"Involving, atmospherically grungy....The camerawork remains alert and alive to the alarming events that punctuate the characters' lives with all-too-frequent regularity."
Hollywood Reporter - Todd McCarthy (01/11/2012)
