Movie synopsis

Ed Burns gives the best performance of his career in James Foley's fast-moving CONFIDENCE. Foley, who directed David Mamet's GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, has learned much from his mentor, making a who's-conning-whom film worthy of the master of the genre. Burns plays Jake Vig, the leader of a small group of con artists who unknowingly steals money from a sleazy but powerful underworld lord known as King. In order to get his dough back, King forces Vig and his gang to pull off a nearly impossible con that could get nearly everyone involved killed. Meanwhile, Vig is being watched closely by a stubbly federal agent who is following the money.Foley has put together a terrific cast, including Paul Giamatti and Rachel Weisz as part of Vig's crew, Andy Garcia as the fed, Dustin Hoffman as King, and Luis Guzman and Donal Logue as two cops on the take. As in Mamet's films, the audience will have to keep guessing whose side the characters are on right up until the final shot, never quite knowing who's conning whom.

Awesome Movie, Great Cast, New Edward Burns Fan!

Review For: Confidence (DVD, 2003)
I love the introduction of a possible real con that people may pull off called "Confidence Games". These types of cons involve setting everything up to appear real to the mark so he takes off, leaving the money behind, which is usually someone else's cash. I've never heard of this type of con before and it's really cool to see how it plays out in the film.

I love the cast of this movie which includes: Edward Burns, Paul Giamatti, Brian Van Holt, Rachel Weisz, Luis Guzman, Donal Logue, Dustin Hoffman, Franky G, Andy Garcia, Morris Chestnut & Robert Forster.

The following actors play the grifters who set up the Confidence Games: Ed Burns, Paul Giamatti, Brian Van Holt, Louis Lombardi & Rachel Weisz.

Luis Guzman & Donal Logue are two cops who work with the grifters but later decide to work with a special agent (Andy Garcia), who later surprises in a huge way.

Dustin Hoffman plays The King, a crime lord who is the latest mark. Franky G is his employee who works with the grifters (he's got a secret, which I actually guessed before it was revealed).

Robert Forster is another mark, which is a target of The King (who hires the grifters to take money from Forster's character). Morris Chestnut plays the mark's employee who eventually has the grifters' leader (Edward Burns) at gunpoint in the movie.

There's plenty of twists and turns, unexpected surprises, flashbacks, and fake deaths of characters in the film that make it an excellent movie.

After seeing Edward Burns in this movie, I started to think he looked cool and should be in more films similar to this. I've recently seen him in One Missed Call and I own but haven't watch yet The River King & Sidewalks Of New York, which also star Ed Burns.

I thought it was interesting to see Dustin Hoffman play an unusual character in crime lord, The King. He does very well though, considering the fact he intimidates Jake Vig (Edward Burns) by slightly expressing what would happen if they don't win back the money the group owes him by pulling a Confidence Game on Morgan Price (Robert Forster).

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes films with cons, interesting characters, twists, surprises, plenty of stars, and all-around cool flicks.

Review For: Confidence (DVD, 2003)
Confidence is one of those moves that once you see it again, you can see how all the pieces fit all together. The entire movie is based on a chess game mentality where every play, all the way to the end has been negotiated precisely. Even scenario has been thought through so the end result is no surprise. Few people that have seen this movie mentioned that the plot has holes, but that means that the person didnt really examine the progression of the story.

A few cons fool there way into some money of a notorious gangster. Once the crew finds out that one of their members has been killed, the crew seeks out the last con and agree to set up and elaborate con to win more money and allow them to repay the gangster. The plot is involved with dirty cops, lawyers, bankers, international borders and a detective who is only a step behind to catching up with the crew.

This movie isnt brain candy and requires some outside the box thinking. It could be a parallel to the Sting, with a moern day twist.

Let's Tarantino It!

Created: 07/31/06
Review For: Confidence (DVD, 2003)
If you ever heard the expression: "Let's Tarantino it," then you know where I am going--if not allow me to explain. Anytime a person use this phrase he or she means to start at the very end and work back to the begining. That's exactly what this film does. It begins by displaying a seemingly tragic end and employs the audience, turned gumshoe, to figure out the plot by moving back in time. Eventually the film 360's back to where it began and allows the audience to put the final piece of the puzzle together.

In the first half of the movie I was a bit confused because it does not back-up in sequential order. It jumps around a lot and makes you question the time frame. Eventually in the second half you start to put the pieces together and things start to make sense--barely.

The problem with this film is that it has to many useless scenes. At least three should have been edited out and some of the remaining scenes should have been switched around to make the film tighter and more concise. All in all, I did enjoy the movie and I thought the acting was good considering the script.
