Jason Robards,Jane Fonda and James Caan star in this classic modern day Western. What the movie lacks in movement and pace in the first hour- it makes up for in the last hour- with romance, action and a great stand-off.
Although Fonda plays the lead character Ella with somber and reservation, her performance shines brightly.
Ella refuses to give her land up as her ex-lover and land baron(Jason Robards) moves in on her territory. She has little success as a rancher, and is about to lose her ranch and home.
Neighbor and recently injured cowboy and rancher,Frank, joins Ella in her fight to save her land and his land. Romance ensues and the rest as they say is history.
Robards speech, about the bull being taken down by a small bulldog and is almost killed until the dog bites the bull to hard on the nose- and the bull stomps the dog to death- gives every underdog hope.
The cow got sick of being picked on and fought back. The dog bit too hard. We all have are limits and Ella and Frank fight back. They were cornered and like maddogs come out fighting and kicking and try to win the final battle of the movie.
Like all good Westerns, the bullets fly and the horses run. In the case of Comes A Horseman, it rattles along as a modern day Western with classic symbolisms of the Old West and the American dream.
Powerful movie bridges the gap between old westerns and more modern examples of American life. The old is represented by Richard Farnsworth' carachter, comfortable and familiar with ranch life, working cattle in and out of the high country. The younger folk, Jane Fonda and James Caan, are stretching the limits imposed on them by their parents, while dealing with the aftermath of the first world war. There is tension between them, yet it is that same tension that pulls them together. The scenery is spectacular, the pace at times lengthy and slow. Cruel life show its hand unexpectedly, allowing some to pick up and carry on, while others have difficulty weaning themselves off their bitterness. The final scenes are fast paced and furious, surprisingly so, as it comes down to are you going to live, or are you going to die. Powerful performances by all the leads, drawing you into emotional support for one side, the good side, over the other. Freedom and hard work, versus greed and manipulation. All in all, a satisfying look into the strengths that built this country, touched by a wee bit of sadness that we seem to have lost some of our gumption along the way. One of those ones that you will not forget. Tomp3801
I love this fil because of the graet acting and horsemanship of James Caan and Jane Fonda. Of course, Jane Fonda was not very popular with we military people who fought in Vietnam bacause she had a picture taken of her standing at a North Vientamese anti-aircraft gun (it looks like a 23 MM gun) which was used to shoot at and shoot down US fighter aircraft. I am sure Senator John McCain would have some choice words for her if he were not fettered by political expediency. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful film with beautiful scenery. It portrays the emegence of oil in the Western US "basin" which today is an ominous problem because the Sierra Club aided and abetted by the EPA are stalemating our drilling for oil in that region. The result? $4.00 gas prices today. It may stop at $10.00/gallon when WE THE PEOPLE "revolt" against our govenment by electing new representatives who truely represent the middle class backbone of our Nation to include small businesss entrepenuers.
