Sissy Spacek became Loretta Lynn in this story of her beginning in Butcher Holler, Kentucky--the oldest of 8 children of a coal miner and his stay-at-home wife. Married at the age of 13, the story follows her and her husband, Mooney, played wonderfully by Tommy Lee Jones as they move to the West coast and he insists that she develop her musical talent to make money for the family. The movie is hilarious, and Sissy Spacek plays the part magnificently and won an Academy Award. Equally good is Beverly D'Angelo as Patsy Cline, who enters the story when Loretta Lynn starts to be heard in Nashville. All three of these stars are wonderful!
The story develops to the point where Loretta becomes well off, and she is touring all the time while her husband takes care of the kids and the ranch that they buy in Nashville.
The music is wonderfully sung by Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo. Songs include Sissy singing "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man", the title song, "Honky Tonk Girl", "You're Looking at Country," and "Don't Come Home a Drinkin'" Beverly sings "Sweet Dreams".
This is a movie not to be missed.
Coal Miner's Daughter is probably one of my most favorite movies of all time (the first being Gone With the Wind). I have been a fan of Loretta Lynn since the 60s. I sing and I can do her songs pretty good, which is thrilling to me. Loretta Lynn's life was accurately depicted in this movie and she hand-picked Sissy Spacek for the part. Coal Miner's Daughter should have taken every Academy Award that year and Tommy Lee Jones was wrongfully overlooked for best male actor award. Every actor in the movie should have won but Tommy's, as well as Cissy's performance, was superb. I highly recommend this movie to any and everyone, no matter whether you are a country music fan or not. Loretta Lynn (with Doolittle Lynn being the force behind her!) managed to escape the poverty of Butcher Hollow, KY, as she knew if Doo hadn't come along when he did, she'd remain there the rest of her life and marry a coal miner and be a widower in her 30s.Despite all of this, she loved her home and never forgot her roots and how hard her father worked and how early in life he died because of coal dust. All of these trajedies are intertwined in her songs. Buy the movie. Watch it over and over and you will treasure it!
COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER is the true story of country music star Loretta Lynn ft. Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones. Overall it's a well cast and entertaining film.
Two editions are available on DVD, but the 25th anniversary edition (released in 2005) includes more features and enhanced tracks.
I LIKE TO LISTEN ABOUT THE OLD DAYS, WHAT PEOPLE DID IN THE DEPRESSION ERA. HER LIFE STORY SHOWS A PERSON THAT NO MATTER WHAT COMES YOUR WAY YOU CAN MAKE A CHANGE TO BETTER YOURSELF. SHE IS TRULY AN INSPIRATION. MY SON IS 30 YEARS OLD AND HE HEARD HER SONG, THE COAL MINERS DAUGHTER AND WANTED HER CD AND DVD OF HER LIFE FOR CHRISTMAS. HE TOLD ME THAT HEARING HER SING MADE HIM GET GOOSEBUMPS. WHEN MY FATHER WAS ALIVE HE WOULD PLAY THE OLD COUNRTY MUSIC OF LORETTA LYNN, HANK SNOW, HANK WILLIAM, ETC. I GROW UP ON COUNTRY MUSIC AND ALWAYS LOVED IT. THANK GOD FOR COUNTRY SINGERS AND THE GREAT SONGS THAT YOU SING.
I really like older movies. I really enjoy watching movies about famous people, such as in this movie the story of Loretta Lynn. It's interesting to know how the famous peoples'life really was. I really don't dislike anything about this movie. I pretty much know the words of this movie word for word. The reason I bought it is because it's about the "queen of country music" and her life. The producers of Coal Miner's Daughter couldn't have picked better actors as Sissy Spacey and Tommy Lee Jones.
