Once the action began, Cliffhanger kept me on the edge of my seat through the whole viewing. Although not a huge fan, I really enjoyed this film as well as my other Stallone favorite, First Blood. Co-starring John Lithgow, who plays a serious sinister role, Cliffhanger gives the viewer a unique panorama of the Rocky Mountains. Not prone to acrophobia, I found my stomach churning in fear around every corner. Apparently the movie was good enough to be nominated for 3 Oscars as well as 7 other nominations. This DVD is now in my personal collection and enjoy an occasional additional look--definitely worth watching.
While not an all time classic, Cliffhanger is one of the better action movies of the 1990's and probably Stallone's last great action flick (along with "Demolition Man") before taking a long break from the genre for what seemed like years. Okay, not so much a break but lets face it, "Assassins" "Judge Dredd" and "The Specialist" were not the high points of Sly's carreer.
So in this one a mid air heist goes wrong and suitcases of money are dropped on random mountain tops. Enter Gabe Walker (Stallone) who is back visiting his ex-girlfriend and old friend for the first time in a year since a terrible accident where his best friends girl was killed while Gabe tried (and failed) to save her. Gabe and Hal (the former best friend, he still blames Gabe for the death of his girl) are grabbed by the bad guys to track down the suitcases full of cash. After disposing of Gabe (or so the bad guys think) he teams up with his old flame Jessie to try and grab the cases of money before the baddies can.
With lots of action and suspense, this was director Renny Harlin's last big movie before he almost made career suicide by directing the bomb "Cutthroat Island" (and killing a production company in the process) If you are a fan of Stallone, you should not hesitate to grab this one as it is one of his better movies, heck if you like explosions, action and some bad one liners, this should be right up your alley too. Oh yeah, and lets not forget John Lithgow as the bad guy who plays the role in the same way Alan Rickman did in "Die Hard" smart, witty and self obsessed. He steals the show from Stallone.
Cliffhanger was a 1994 comeback of sorts for action hero Sylvester Stallone, best and one of the scariest movie moments all time The opening scene of a climber falling to her death without being rescued by Gabe Walker (Sylvester Stallone.
This blu ray of Cliffhanger is awesome. The picture quality is amazing with plenty of shots of the mountains covered in snow. Sound is also great with plenty of explosions and a cool soundtrack that sound amzaing with the home theater system. The best part is that this action movie still holds up after 20 years! Its a buy
This is an excellent action movie that I have wanted for my collection for
quite some time. One of Sylvester Stallone's best!
