Movie synopsis
A supposedly reformed cat burglar, out to prove himself innocent of a recent crime spree, tries to capture the thief who's terrifying the French Riviera. Cary Grant is devastatingly elegant as the reformed thief, John Robie, and charming enough to attract the attention of the lovely Frances Stevens (Grace Kelly), a wealthy and spoiled American traveling the Riviera with her widowed mother (Jessie Royce Landis). However, things do not begin on a romantic note. Robie is more interested in clearing his name than in pursuing the beautiful American, but the two will not go their separate ways so easily. When Mrs. Stevens has her jewels stolen, the snubbed Frances puts the police on Robie's trail. Now the dashing Robie will have to win the confidence and assistance of Frances if he is to ever set things right. The stars are radiant together, with an entrancing chemistry that sparkles, especially in the impromptu ad-libbed dialogue of the picnic scene. A series of elaborate set pieces combined with dramatic Riviera scenery make the film an enduring glamorous spectacle, featuring a fireworks kissing scene that is truly a classic.

Grant, Kelly & The French Riviera OhhLaLa!

While known as "The Master of Suspense", director, Alfred Hitchcock stepped into a whole new arena with To Catch A Thief. This film has mystery, intrigue and romance all set in the exquisite background of the French Riviera.
Reformed jewel thief, John Robie (Cary Grant) once known as "The Cat" is suspected of a rash of jewel thefts occuring in the incredibly luxurious hotels of the French Riviera. When he meets pampered heiress, Francis Stevens (Grace Kelly) he sees an opportunity to use her mother, Jessie Steven's (Jessie Royce Landis) fabulous jewel collection to bait the real thief and prove himself innocent. When his plan backfires, Frances, who believes him guilty, proves her love by helping him escape.
The scenery is breathtaking, the costuming (by the legendary Edith Head) is spectacular and the cinematography garnered the 1955 Academy Award for Best Cinematography. It also received Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction/Set Decoration.
The romantic chemistry between Grant and Kelly is palpable. Newly restored and better than ever (though the packaging doesn't refer to being remastered, the picture quality is much better) this is a 5 star movie all the way! The extra featurettes are also worthy of checking out and includes an interview with Mr. Hitchcock's daughter Patricia, a wonderful profile of Edith Head-The Paramount Years, and the making of To Catch a Thief.

To Catch a Thief is a "must see"

Review For: To Catch a Thief (DVD, 2009, 2-Disc Set, Sensormatic; Paramount Centenntial Collection)

"To Catch a Thief" is a 1955 romantic thriller artfully created by director Alfred Hitchcock and starring screen legends Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. The film is shot in technicolor on location in the French Riviera, and has been called Hitchcok's "most beautiful film."
Grant plays John Robie, aka "The Cat," a retired jewel thief who is living lavishly in a French villa in the hills. But when a string of new jewel thefts hit the area, the police suspect Robie and put pressure on him. Enter Grace Kelly's character Francis, daughter of a wealthy American socialite and a prime target for the thief.
Robie joins forces with an insurance investigator to help catch the new thief and clear his name while being pursued by the police and by Francis, who is fascinated by him. Kelly is beautiful and glamorous, as usual, and the on-screen chemistry between Kelly and Grant is believable, despite the age difference. (She was 26. He was 51.)
The suspense in the film comes from not knowing if Robie has turned back to a life of crime (but come on, it's Cary Grant!), and following Robie as he tries to guess which of his former friends from his days in the French Resistance may be the new thief.
The movie includes a famous and lavish "costume party" scene later spoofed by Blake Edwards in "The Pink Panther." The mood of the film is reminiscent of a different time, when there were men like Cary Grant, women like Grace Kelly, and when the upper class actually had class. The film is predicatable, but only because it has been copied by so many lesser, later films. By today's standards, it's "G" rated, with no foul language and no graphic violence.
The film is a delight for classic movie buffs and should be on everyone's "must see" list.

Murder, Mystery, Intrigue - A Hitchcock Classic!

One of my favorite Hitchcock movies, "To Catch A Thief" contains all the elements of his classic thrillers. It features two of my all-time favorite actors: the debonair Cary Grant as John Robie, "The Cat", a former jewel thief suspected in a rash of burglaries; and the always beautiful and radiant Grace Kelly as Frances, the spoiled heiress who falls for him.

It features stunning cinematography as well. This movie was made in the 1950's during a period when Hitchcock directed what many consider his greatest films, including "Rear Window", "Vertigo", "North by Northwest", and "Dial 'M' For Murder." All are great choices for anyone interested in the movies of Alfred Hitchcock.
