I originally couldn't find this film anywhere in the UK or on Ebay. I knew that I wanted the film because it was part of my Tartan Asian Extreme collection. I one day wrote the name into Ebay search and I found it being sold over in USA. So I grapped it despite it being Region 1 DVD format.
I loved the way that the film is laid out and can understand why we never got to see this film over in the UK. The main reason for this is not because it is too scary but because the main story is focused on child abuse. The main villian is often shown hitting her children and its very graphic. But I really enjoyed the Japanese feel that this film had as it comes from Japanese folklore as the film explains.
If I had to say something that I didn't like about the film then it would be the fact that there is alot of child abuse in it. I would also say that the story may be confusing to people that are used to westernised films and not the shocks and wonder of eastern films.
I have never seen this product sold anywhere eles on the web or shops so I'm glad to say that I own a copy of it.
I feel it completes any collectors shelf who collects or like Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Taiwanese horror films.
For the past year, I've been wanting to get my hands on Carved.. What has held me back? The lack of love for Tartan Asia Extreme releases in major retails.. Now with the recent closure of the American and UK branches, Tartan DVDs will slip into obscurity as quickly and silently as they had raised their head...
The Slit-Mouthed Woman is about a Japanese tale (real or fake? Who knows anymore!) about a once beautiful woman, scarred by her husband... Her ghost takes her anger out on children now, with a nice pair of scissors to help her out...
Without saying much, I can say this movie was worth the wait of a year to see... Check it out if possible, before we get a theatrical release starring Scarlett Johansson as the Slit-Mouthed Woman..
This movie was great. In a world where horror movies are revamped and remade, this one comes with an original thought. I dont know if the "slit faced woman" is an actual myth in japan or just a plot for the story but it works very well and if you are a fan of good horror movies, this one won't dissapoint you.
This is everything a horror movie should be. With only 90 minutes of play-time, this movie never lets you rest.
The acting in it is top notch and you can clearly see how well the actors tried by paying attention to their facial expressions. While they are rather simple, there is a amount of depth to them that helps keep the story intriguing all the way up to the climatic ending.
The Slit mouthed woman herself is quite a sight to behold and the make-up is perfectly done. It looks amazingly real and they could not have picked a better, more beautiful actress than who they chose. This is the exact same with the entire cast as they all brought something different to the movie. The best part had to be the children because you can tell just how hard they worked to make this movie a worth-while film.
Special effects and visual effects were first rate and each scene brought something to the movie. Everything looked so real and actually felt like you could touch it.
For some final thoughts, this movie had me the second it started with the opening credits and is definitely worth the money. The Slit Mouthed Woman could very well be (and I hope she is) the next horror icon.
